Would you buy a motorcycle from a used car dealer?

As I'm sure many of you have, now that the bike has been put away I've been going online and looking at ways to tweak my bike or replace it with something more suitable for my aching old knees! I saw a bike advertised that was at an "enterprise" that deals only in used vehicles, mainly cars but there was also a couple boats and a motor home and 1 other bike. Would this be something to steer clear of when looking at a used bike? They can't all be trade ins, so where do these places get them from? The other vehicles appear to be fairly hi end and the price is in line with other ads so its not one of those too-good-to-be-true things. But, I'm very familiar with the model line and I cannot recall one ever having the graphic this one does for the name on the tank, yet there is no mention of it being repainted in the ad. The bike is 3 hours away so I don't want to waste time and money going to look at it, if I never should have considered it in the first place. Any opinions fellas? thanks

move on to the next one.

Yes.
Once you get out of the bigger cities, dealerships of all kinds are few and far between.
Local garages become used car dealers, and if you live 20 miles from nowhere, what ya gonna do, stick on the side of the highway with a for sale sign on it. "For Sale, Please Don't Steal Me" Many bikes sold this way are actually on consignment, still owed by the user, but left on the lot for sale.
If its in the city, it must belong to someone working there or the dealer wont allow the sale.
Check it out, test ride it, you never know.

It depends.
If the dealer you're buying it from is into the hobby and likes riding, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the bike. If he is just flipping bikes an has no clue about anything then I would stay away from it.

I sell used cars and if a bike was to come on trade, you bet I would take it and sell it if the price was right.

Yeah - got a decent deal when I traded my Silverwing to a Burgman 650 . The Burgman had nothing on it in the way of mileage. Still going strong afaik with another rider here. No issues
Depends on the bike - depends on the dealer.

Probably not from a corner used car lot.But i wouldn't have a problem buying from a dealer. The Volks dealer down the road from me sells BMW's all the time.He gets a lot of flak from BMWNA for doing it tho.Do your homework and you'll be fine.

Yes, I would and I have. BUT you need to know what you're buying. Sometimes it's a good deal only because they took the bike in trade, don't really know much about it and are just trying to get their money out of it before they take it to auction. So the price could be crazy high or crazy low, you need to know what it's worth.

Well said. Markham Mitsu is selling a "brand new" (7km on it) 2009 CBR600RR for $9995 but I'm not sure I would even consider buying it there despite knowing basically everyone at the dealership since only one or 2 guys there even remotely know bikes.

The guy that traded it in did it for an Evo, he got it at a bike show and never even bothered with his M2.

Most likely they just took it in on trade and just want to sell it at a profit. I bought a slightly used Honda many years ago from a GM dealer in Orillia. Saw it out front and they even let me take it out for a test ride...mind you this was many many years ago.
Still I got a great deal with no regrets...except maybe selling that bike...worth more now then when I sold it.
Mind you if this is one of those car dealers that operate out of a small lot with a single room office....run away!

Sure, why not?

I'll buy a vehicle from anywhere. When I go and look at a car/bike I don't care about who's selling it so much as what condition and price it's listed at. You can't trust a dealer no matter if it's nice fancy modern big name dealer or some shady curbsider. They are all looking for your money and will tell you what it takes to get your money.
