Winterizing AFTER winter comes

So I'm sure quite a few of you are still riding up to the bitter cold of winter.

But, as snow started coming down, I was wondering...

How would you winterize the bike AFTER the cold/snowfall has come?
I know you'd need to ride it for quite a bit to get all the oil warmed up and flowing before emptying it. I just bought some rear stands so I guess you could have it in gear then...

any other suggestions?
...For people w/o stands...
...or a garage...

Just idle it outside for it to warm up.
 
You can just leave it running in neutral to warm it up.

U're screwed man... nothing you can do now, it's too late, start shopping for a new bike that was winterized before the first snow.
 
I don't get it. You just idle it and change the oil, fill the gas with a bottle if you can't ride to the station, add some stabilizer, put on some rust protection if it's going to be sitting outside, remove the battery and put it on a trickle charger in the house if you can't wire something right to the bike. Same as before winter. You don't even need stands.

Ahh, Keeping it in neutral/idle seems like the consensus here...

I may have been under the impression that you had to get it in gear because the oil won't pump through the filters. But I guess the heat would dissipate enough through the engine to loosen up all the oil for better flow.

Dafuq I just read..... :confused:
 
The oil pump will be running whether the bike is in neutral or in gear. Otherwise your engine would burn up quite quickly if you left it idling for too long or if you revved it in neutral. This is the same for pretty much every 4 stroke engine in every vehicle as far as I am aware.

Not true, propeller wind driven oil pumps need air flow. You could try doing it on a windy day.

Honestly warming up the engine is not critical.

What kind of bike or car comes with a propeller driven oil pump? That seems like a terrible idea to me on almost any vehicle.

drain old oil
put new oil in

follow what i said, in exactly the order i said it, and you'll be fine
