When I posted my Rogers rant that ended with my son getting twice the speed at a lower cost Wingboy was quick to doubt Rogers.
Well, I think the speed is ok but the new ignite modem wasn't strong enough for him to get a signal upstairs AND THEN they put placed his account charges on my account making the credit on his account moot.
I can't take it any more, that is the last straw, I'm finding somebody new on Monday.

The crazy part is Rogers is by far the better or the 2 big companies. I have yet to have an interaction with Bell where they haven't outright lied and screwed up so bad I will never deal with them again.

I'm using a subservice carrier, Wightman Telecom. I ditched the crooks at Rogers years ago. I'm really unhappy about them taking over Shaw too. Rogers sucks.
 
Ah, the story of internet speeds .....
Along with the speed, do a comparo of the response times. I was getting a consistently faster response with DSL technology vs Cable technology.
The modem is another speed breaker.
I have seen techies from both Cable and DSL companies giving you the measurement at the terminal and never at the modem. This to me is not really the whole truth when they promise you a certain speed.
The fine print also states "up to" X speed, so they are off the hook in case the speed drops.
Ultimately, the speed that you get is determined by the "pipe" that has the least diameter i.e. the wiring of your home.
Then there is the controversy of being in the "pool" i.e. cable technology that slows down when the rest of the neighbourhood jumps in.
As for costs, we all know that internet charges in Canada are not the most consumer-friendly.

I need to ditch Bell.
March 19, I called to get a tv set top box replaced, as one of mine burnt up.
Bell: "would you like a refurbished box, or a new one?"
Me: "new".
Bell: "that'll be nine days for delivery".
Me: "huh"?
Bell: "a refurbished box is only 5 days".
Me: "whatever, just send a new one".
That was 15 days ago. Still waiting.
Yet I can order some bike **** from England on a Saturday, and have it on my porch Wednesday.
Tires from petes took 6 days.
Bell fibe, $220 / month.
I swore off cogeco yrs ago.
Don't know where to go. (TV, home phone, internet)
 
It’s unfortunately the same as Canadian politics....we end up choosing the least worst one of the bunch.

Not sure if the blame lays on the politicians, or people that we don’t demand better from the companies that eff us over on the regular.

It's hard to demand better. We have no power. They provide services that are close to a need today. Any time someone tries to disrupt and improve the system, they are swallowed and crushed. This is squarely in the lap of politics/CRTC completely failing to protect us from the hard and dry treatment.
 
Where I live in Wellesley there’s a local telecom company, Mornington Communications, who has their own network and their own fibre lines. The cost for 50/50 internet is around $60 a month which isn’t bad. It’s been very reliable and when there was an outage it was fixed very quickly.
The best part, the couple of times I’ve had to call, the phone was answered almost immediately, by a real person!
We also switched our cell phones to them. They run on Bell towers so it’s reliable service, but again, I’m dealing with a local office and can get through to someone very easily, or I can walk down the road and talk to a person in their office - try doing that with any of the other companies! And the cost for 2 cell phones with them is $70 a month!
