Will these (car) brakes pass safety certification? (photo)

I have a car that needs to get certified.

These are the brake pads (front)... Do you think these are thick enough to pass certification? I say yes. I just don't want to spend any more money on it right now.

Any mechanics on the board that can certify this car for me? Please post the cost. Everything else is mint (lights, horn, glass, tires, rims, suspension, etc).

It's hard to say from the pics alone but that inside pad is certainly close. The center looks ok but on the 2nd pic the inside pad looks like it tapers down at the bottom, but that could just be the way it looks in the photo. If the pad is worn evenly, then you should be able to get a cert on it.

I know you said your not looking at putting any more money into this car but you already have at least 1 side apart. Why not just fire some $25 white box specials in there and your good to go. Could even add new brakes to your selling points.

What car is it?

The inside pads are pretty bad. Hard to say from picture but if i had to guess would say no. But brake pads are cheap. You should get them changed regardless. Are you selling the car and don't want to spend ?

Safety limit is 1.5mm as per MTO, which it looks like you pass. Saying that though, most techs won't pass pads at 3mm or lower so you may have to fight them on it.

Yep, I am selling the car. I have a prospective buyer who wants it certified and cheap. I don't blame him, he is just looking for his best deal.

If I was going to keep it, I would spend the money and replace the rotors at the same time, do it right and be worry free for a while.

08 Toyota Highlander

Pads even car quest cheapie are like $30 out the door.
I guess that's an option.

Mmmh, I think I rather get new brake pads and save me the fight. The new owner may want to do rotors and pads later.

If i was the buyer i would rather change the pads and rotors and just pay a bit more

New front pads on rock auto from as low as

FRICTION MASTER Part # CMX1324 $9.83CAD

RAYBESTOS Part # SGD1324C $20.91CAD

Jeesh! It is a 2008. If I were buying it I would gladly have the brakes done properly. It is not like the car is a 1998 beater or something.

Check out platinumautoparts.ca . They saved me lots of money. For example you can get moog parts 20%+ cheaper than CT/napa same day or next day. Most of their parts are pretty close to to rockauto prices. I was really surprised they got me remanufactured calipers for ~$80. Their online catalog doesn't always work, but give them a call.

FFS, you already pulled the pads and you're too damn cheap to pop a new set in????

Whats worse is thats how he probably views his bikes maintenance as well.

Kinda scary to think what kind of heaps are rolling down the road if $30 dollar brake pads are being discussed.

The labour is realistically nothing. I can pull the pads out from one wheel -with my eyes closed and a rum and coke in one hand- in less than 10 minutes.

I pulled them out, took the pics, and them put them back on. I think it took longer to get the photos out of the camera and uploaded to Photobucket.

I'm not sure what gave you that impression. I wrote above... "If I was going to keep it, I would spend the money and replace the rotors at the same time, do it right and be worry free for a while. "

Why not just replace them? It's like $100 to do a whole front end including cheap eBay rotors.

Nobody is gonna mention that the caliper is probably seized?

Those will most likely pass, if that was my car I would put them in and keep driving until the next oil change at least. I'm not a fan spending extra money that is not required.
