will my motorcycle be stolen?

I get my bike next weekend - paranoia is setting in - If I drive it to work and leave it parked all day will it be there at 5pm? North Toronto area.

What if I go hiking in Algonquin park overnight? Any chance of seeing my bike the next day when I walk out of the bush?

Nothing fancy just a KLX250 but at about 300lbs its obviously not too tough to lift into a truck or van.

Invest in a disc lock, and an insurance policy - that is the best that you can do. The one comfort is that it's the Supersport bikes that are picked on/picked up by and large.. but if someone wants it, they are going to have it.

hire a homeless guy to watch it, just don't pay up front

Lmao.

Honestly, if you're that worried about theft, why don't you just drive your car to work..... I live in that general area, a little farther north, and i haven't had any issues with theft, but then again, i don't leave my bike anymore for more then 10 mins alone, but sometimes thats all it takes for someone to steal it !

I know my friend's gsxr600 was stolen from the Vaughan Mills parking lot in the time frame of 15 mins as he was stopping in to buy something. I will never leave my bike there.

I wouldn't be worried about it getting stolen: I'd be worried about it getting backed into. =(

Every summer there are dozens of thread with pictures of knocked over bikes T_T

Oh yeah, this too, its a really ****** feeling, especially when the driver who backs into you, drives off..... two of my buddies were victims of this, luckily there was a bike rolling through and saw the car that hit on of the bikes, got the plate, all was taken care of lol

I'm on a Honda CRF230 and often worry about the same thing. I park downtown amongst other bikes, most nicer than mine, so I'm not too worried, but when I work late sometimes its the last one out there. I was thinking of carrying a length of chain and a big padlock so I can lock the it through the back wheel to a pole of some sort.

Always knowing, of course, that if someone wants it they're gonna get it. Everybody knows this. This will stop the common thieves, and the pro's want other bikes than ours.

I'm also planning a 2 nighter this spring in Algonquin and will definitely chain my bike if I do any canoeing. An light-weight dualie sitting around in pickup country? I'd be amazed if someone didn't take it. (If you want to talk about riding up together let me know. I was thinking hwy 35 all the way up.)

Its a tough call. Lug a heavy chain around or live paranoid.

Remember though, its not a matter of whether or not you're paranoid, its whether or not you're paranoid enough. (I think thats gonna be my new signature!)

Although this may not help the paranoia (it will probably make it worse >.<), there was someone that got their bike stolen at Jane & 7 (A little north of 7). That being said, there really isn't anything you can do if someone wants to take your bike. If they can lift it, they can take it. Just try to park it out of sight if you are set to riding it to work.

Insurance is the only thing you can really rely on in terms of theft.

As for your plans up North, from my observations, theft rates for motorcycles are A LOT lower than areas closer to Toronto. People aren't going to follow you all the way up there or just happen to come across your bike and decide to steal it. They have a bigger selection in the city, barely having to drive a block before finding a target.

Hence Chaining it to something solid. Sure, insurance will help, but who wants to live even a day without their ride?

Maybe the final thing, but prevention is the first thing.

And also, these are all opinions, but I think your's in this case is a little uninformed. (Nothing personal PLau - I've read a bunch of your posts and usually like what you say.) But like I'd mentioned, we're talking off-road bikes in off-road country. If you have a farm or some sort of property you can ride on, why bother with registry and insurance? Its all about the joyride. Maybe nobody wants a sportbike up there, not practical, but offer up some knobbies and see what happens.

'Nuff said.

Im going to pick up a disc lock and will have full insurance. I do have a heavy cable and bike lock as well that I could use up north. I suppose that if someone wants it badly enough they will take it - nothing I can do about that.

For up north and leaving it overnight -- Why not get a good chain lock and try to loop it around a tree, post, etc? For city parking if that isn't feasible, then I'd use a disc lock (especially something like a Xena with an alarm).

Woah woah woah, someone likes what I say? Lol, thats a surprise.

I guess you're right if you're leaving overnight in a place where those types of bikes are more popular. The OP also mentioned riding the bike to work so the bike will probably need to be insured anyways.

I think the disc lock would probably be the better choice unless you plan on chaining the bike everywhere you go.

-> I don't take things personally so don't worry bout it ;) It is just an opinion after all

well the fact that you just advertised where your bike will be and what time sure does make the thieves' lives a little easier.

Really? I gave an intersection, around that area there are probably over 100km of road that the bike could be on. Its not like I gave an exact address - give me a break.

Thieves have a team of members that do nothing but look over google maps using a complex formula of mathematics along with current satilite view they can pin point any bike within 1cm. Being that you now have posted you are nervous that your bike will be stolen only up's the challenge. See they all compete to see who is the master thief. They also have baiters for the car theft world but it is hard to be a master baiter in today's world.. It's all about the high score man...

Good luck man !!
