Why no ticket?

A group of 4 bikes riding through the countryside, come over the crest of a hill doing around 100. Over the crest the posted speed drops to a 50, and the leader starts engine breaking fast immediately after the sign, and passes by 2 cops at a radar trap at likely 30 over (with one rider close behind). The other two riders hit the breaks hard coming over the crest when they spot the trap. To everyone's surprise, the cops don't react.

Curious to get your take on why no attempt to stop the riders was made? I'm wondering with the amount of bikes going at slightly different speeds, is it possible it made it difficult to clearly lock on or single out one of the bikes? I'm imagining letting the riders go out of the goodness of their heart is least likely since it seemed like the prime opportunity to issue a ticket.

Never heard of anything like this before. If this is the case, sounds like you're less likely to get a speeding ticket while riding with a group versus on your own.

maybe because they saw that the group clearly made an attempt to comply with posted limits?

yeah, they could have written all of them up, but why try to play psychic and analyse it? they got lucky this time. . .move on?

of course, the cops could have just figured that if they lit them up, that they'd run anyways, and there are easier targets coming over the rise in the next minute or two. . .

if they were using LIDARs with magnified scopes, they could read all four bikes' individual speeds without any issues

it's also possible the bikes' indicated speeds were overreading, so they may have been going slower than 80

enforcement target could have been +20

i guess the massive drop in speed may have helped, leader was smart to start braking when he saw the sign... rather than wait to recognize a speed trap, in which case it would have been too late

the day might have ended with four flat-beds or worse

It might not have been a trap. Might just have been a couple of officers pulled off and having a discussion.

They might have figured it would be dangerous if the rider chose to run with the prospects of catching any, if they split up, not worth the risk.

The cops might have been hoping for HTA 172 charges, which 30 over isn't.

.

A bunch of bikes pulled over just after the crest of a hill could be a crashup waiting to happen. Free lesson, take it.

Cops are humans too...as someone said, maybe they saw you made an effort to comply...and decide to give you a pass.

Maybe they glanced away from the scope to chat or something and there you are and they didn't have time to get a good reading...or a million other things.

Don't read too much into it...on any given day they could bend you over for the exact same behavior.
