Which David Hough Book - Proficient Motorcycling or Mastering the Ride ?

Hey All,

Totally new. I picked up the ministry handbook for morocycles.

I have heard great things about David L. Hough's books -- Proficient Motorcycling and Mastering the Ride.

Was curious which one I would get the most out of.

I recall he had another book, More Proficient Motorcycling that went out of print. I think that might have become Mastering the Ride (new edition), but I've heard that Mastering the Ride is readable/useful for noobs, too.

Short of buying both, which one would be most useful for me? It's not in stock at Amazon, but a local bookstore has both.

Thanks!

I haven't read both, but I recommend the first to everyone.

They are both great, but the if you are a new rider start with the first. In my opinion though you will get more out of it after you've completed your basic course. There is a ton of great info in both books, and I re-read them every spring just as a refresher.

OP

I have both and they are each very good but emphasize different things and also the latter book seems to be broader in focus and less specific in the details.I think the second book is directed at 'intermediate' riders.

Get the first book for sure - very well worth it. I had to work through it fairly slowly as it can take some effort to imagine and think through what David bough is trying to get across - especially how a bike responds depending on what you do.

Proficient Motorcycling is excellent. As recommended though this book is more useful once you've taken the MSF course and started riding. The book is packed with information and you'll need to read it slowly to digest everything. Also, pick up Keith Code's DVD "Twist of the Wrist". Enjoy riding and ride safe.
