Going for my M1 next month so I figure I'll start studying a little for it. They ask so many technical/legal questions (at least they did for the G1 - but that was many moons ago). What's the best place to buy the book (anyone want to get karma and lend me their old one for a month or so I'm in North York)!

I've read that you need to study the whole Motorcycle handbook + a part of the G handbook as well.. which parts and what to expect?

Thanks!

If I can remember correctly, you only need to know the road rules and signs that you were tested on for the G1 plus additional sections specific to the M1 from the moto handbook. If you plan to take the safety course in the spring, additional basics will be taught and tested there for your M1 exit.

You can buy the book from any Drive Test centre or at Chapters. It can also be downloaded online here for $14.95. Just put "motorcycle" in the search bar and it will come up on the list:

if you're strapped for cash, head down to your local library. They might just have a copy.

Also have seen them at Canadian tire, in the rack where they keep the map books.

Thanks man. Never thought of CT. I Have one pretty close to me and I'm there all the time.

On a very un-related subject - I just found out that none of the local distributors carry the type of boot I want (A* SMX-1). I find my shoe sizes varies greatly depending on boots/shoes so I really want to try out a few sizes to get a good grasp of my sizes. How do I manage this given that most places like RC can only order in a single pair :S

Cheers

For your M1 test you can practice the questions here: http://www.carsaga.ca/driving-test/ontario-m1-motorcycle-driving-test/

Don't get fixated on a particular style of boot yet. I went to Royal Distributing and bought what was comfortable and on sale.
Believe me, your first set of boots gets pretty messed up as you are learning.

As for boot sizing, back in the olden days they had a shoe fitting tool. Most shoe stores still do even if the sales clerk doesn't
know how to use it.

Go to a shoe store and see if they can measure your foot. This will aid in boot selection.

Fair enough - I did drive down to RD a few weeks ago to check boots out but they had a poor selection (likely due to winter). The only boots I found that fit nice were the Icon Superduty's.. but the buckles felt cheap and looked like they would snap off in a week or two so I decided against it. The SMX-1's have been getting some pretty solid reviews for a 3/4 boot so it's something I'm leaning towards.

I guess I'll take a trip down there in March to see what they have out.

As far as sizing goes - I know my size number but regardless different manufacturers tend to have different sizing - for ex. I would normally be a 42 in a jacket but a 44 fits me better in an A* jacket.

I guess waiting for the spring the weekend before I hop on the bike I'll take a drive down and figure it out.

Head down to the show this weekend and you can try everything you need for sizing. Usually find some good deals too. I have the SMX-1's and love them. Very comfortable, but 10c and under they aren't the warmest boot.

What's the best place to buy the book...!

When I did mine I just used the MTO website. They have the entire contents of the book on their website. The navigation isn't great, but you can start here and use the next/prev at the bottom.
http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/handbook/motorcycles/index.shtml

Study for the entire G1. The M1 test is actually a G1 test with an additional page stapled to the bottom. The contents of that book is online too:
http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/handbook/index.shtml

For some people it's worth it to pay the $15, for me I'd rather sit on the couch with my tablet and not have to go anywhere or pay anything.

Also just checking that you know M1 only lasts 90 days. Training courses and MTO exit tests don't start until spring. Make sure you can get an upgrade test or training course in before then, or it will expire and you'll have to do it again.

Hey thanks for this. Yeah I plan to take it in mid-Feb and I have signed up for the RTI course for April 6th.. so I'm covered :)

If u got an iphone/ipad check the App Store. There's an app to prep for your M1.

You should be able to find a copy of the M1 test online to study if you're worried. I might even have it at home (either that or the M2 exit checklist) I'll check later.

there's three tests, motorcycle specific, road signs, rules and laws/graduated licencing/drink drive stuff (think that's the g1 test)

here's another practice site. It has motorcycle road signs and the g1 stuff.

M1 was this for me: The G1 test with another page stapled in of 10 motorcycle related questions.
I got the SMX1 at Riders Choice. There's nothing special about the boot. It's comfier than my old puma's for sure. It was on sale and fit so I bought it. Don't be a gear fan boy, just get what fits on your foot and in your budget.

Wicked. Thanks a lot for all the links ya'll. Much appreciated. Will spend some time this week looking it over before going for my M1 on Friday. All I have left in my gear list are some boots which I hope to pick up next weekend as well. Can't wait to get on the bike!
