When is the time to buy?

Hello Everybody!

A bit about myself:

I got my M1 in August of 2009, took the RTI course and got my M2 in October of 2009 (I was 17 at the time). I haven't been able to actually start riding because my parents will not support my motorcycle infatuation, however they don't have a problem if I spend my own money. That being said, insurance has been the biggest obstacle. I was quoted over 3000/year for liability only on a 2001 Ninja 250.

Now that I'm slightly older (maybe slightly wiser as well :p), and have had my M2 for quite some time I am thinking of starting riding. I have done thorough research on motorcycles, insurance, gear and maintenance costs and have saved up enough to cover all of the above, plus a bit extra just in case. I am set on getting a 2009 or 2010 Ninja 250 as I will have to be taking my M2 exit test soon and insurance is unreasonably expensive on anything bigger. Meloche Monnex gave me the lowest quote of 1300/year full coverage. They said that their renewals are in February and the rates may change.

I am currently having a dilemma; if I take advantage of the low prices of the bike now, the insurance may increase such that I cannot afford it anymore, and will just be stuck with the bike. If I wait until the new rates come out in February, the bike prices will go up and I wont be able to get that good of a deal. Having the experience that you have, which would you guys/gals recommend?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I'm open to any comments/suggestions!

Maybe I don't get it. If both bike prices and insurance prices are going up in a month or two and you're looking for the best time to buy, wouldn't that be now? You have to get insurance for a full year anyways.

I'd buy the bike now. If you have a safe place to store it you can sit on the paperwork until spring and then register/insure it. I can't say how much or how little the rates will increase this year but, in my experience, it hasn't been prohibitive (i.e., I paid $1400 my first year and maybe ~$1450 the second year). If worse comes to worst you can always sell the bike in spring for probably the same amount if not more.

Welcome!!

Buy now. Insurance rarely goes down. Bike prices go up right about when March rolls around.
