whats the difference: frame slider vs engine/crash guard

Frame sliders bolt to the frame (or to an engine mounting bolt - which bolts to the frame). Engine guards bolt to the engine - generally replacing or over top of parts of the engine that are vulnerable to contacting the ground and breaking or wearing through and thus causing oil to escape (and allow dirt to get in).

The purpose of a frame slider is to hopefully stop the main part of the bike from contacting the ground in a crash. The purpose of an engine guard is so that IF the vulnerable engine part comes in contact with the ground while crashing, it doesn't immediately shatter or wear through and thus cause oil to leak out onto the racetrack.
