What's the deal with autoglass claims?

I replace the glass on my cage....stupid crack got too big and didn't catch it in time to fill it. The guys at the glass place said 250 to do cash deal. however I put it in through insurance and they charged the insurance company like $854.12. No wonder we pay so much in insurance between fraud and "certified vendors" gouging them. I would have done cash if it would have made my premium go up but it didn't...

The cash deal is for aftermarket glass. OEM glass can cost 4X as much as the same thing from a third party supplier.

Maybe you have to use OEM in an insurance claim???

this is common among insurance repairs. a shop can "justify" a lot more cash from a ins. co. than a person.

this is part of the reason ins. is so expensice in ontario.

$250 cash??? What kind of cheap glass are they using?
I went to Apple Auto glass and had to pay $600 for my Acura windshield.

They all get their "cheap" glass from the same warehouse. Apple / Speedy Glass included.
Speedy (formerly Apple) has overhead. Dude running around in his '73 former Bell van has very little overhead.

It wasn't that long ago that glass repair shops set their own pricing. Then, Insurance Companies stepped in and dictated how much they were going to pay for each and every windshield / door glass etc claim. Glass shops had to comply.

Speedy (parent company of Apple) has bought back nearly every franchise from private owners. There are still a couple "hold outs", but for the most part, almost all Apple Auto Glass shops are now Speedy glass, and are NOT privately owned.

Same thing on my 2011 F150.

Called a guy up and he gave me 2 prices. One cash deal was $320 or insurance claim was $780.
I told him i wanted OEM glass through insurance.

He took care of my deductible, and i only had to pay $80 out of pocket for OEM glass.

funny.. i broke the rear glass on my VW... had a good glass guy come by.. gave 2 prices.. one aftermarket.. one OEM.. the OEM was $24 more.. and that was a cash price for both.

Does claiming through your insurance not put a strike against you in the long run? I always figured a little claim here, a little claim there, eventually they'll tell you to go **** yourself.
