What would you expect to pay for a reliable used car?

Sedan or minivan. I've been out of the market for years but a relative needs new wheels and reliability is a factor as they will be transporting someone with mobility issues. No frills is probably best.

TIA

Depends on model year, specific model, options, mileage, condition, etc. There is no correct answer.

A good bet for easy accessibility, inexpensive, reliable, and easy/cheap to maintain is probably going to be a four or five year-old Dodge Caravan. There are lots out there. You should be able to find one in good condition and reasonable mileage for around $8K to $10K easily enough.

I was going to say the same thing..cheap to fix..cheap to buy..not the MOST reliable but good enough. Did I mention cheap? :-) I saw ads for them in the paper, V6, A/C etc for $18,900 new..how can you beat that??

^^ whats such a suprise about that?

for 19,000 go buy a new Dodge Journey ( i cant believe i'm praising Dodge...) but the rental Journey i drove from Boston to Toronto was a pleasant suprise. good handling, quiet, great pickup and to top it all off, i was averaging 8L/100km in a crossover!?!?!

what does "reliable" mean? every gadget works? or just the basics that will get u down the road?

Yeah, I hear ya. People trash them all the time as not being reliable (including Consumers Reports) but I've known lots of people that have had them and while they're not awesome vehicles reliability-wise, they've rarely been stranded by them. Some squeaks and groans in the interior..otherwise, they say they can't be beat for utility and price. I had a rental Sebring a while back..did some stuff a lot better than my Honda does to be honest..and my Honda has stranded me..which is a mortal sin in my books!! :-)

I would even say that for $5000 maybe even a little less you should be able to get something reliable. Just try to stick to cars that are one owner, lower km and have all the service records. For $5000 it will be a few years old,

some examples

dont look at price in terms of reliablity, because there is no correlation. That $2000 winter beater can be more reliable then the $10000 late model car you buy.
