anyone have a good one? or recommend one? Ill need to haul some books and a laptop. i live 15 min away from UTM, and intend on using the backpack on 4 hour trips to kingston every second weekend so need something good

Strap it on the bike if you can...high up weight can be unsettling. Get a tailbag. Added bonus...no sweaty patch on your back.

I can't help with specific names, but there are several tail bags that have backpack straps, or specific ridding backpacks that strap to the bike.. I definitely recommend going this route. Something you can affix to the bike while ridding, but then remove easily to bring it around campus. Wearing it on your back for 15 minutes won't be the end of the world.. 4 hours will get very annoying IMO.

use the search...there was a 6 page thread on this a few weeks ago

I had a red "Swiss Gear" backpack for when I used to ride to college every day. It expands to be reasonably big. More than enough room to fit all my books and a laptop, plus it has a spine protector so it was pretty comfortable to ride with. I also used to fill it up with groceries sometimes. I've had it since the beginning of high school and it still works great. Very high quality!

This is what it looked like fully-loaded when I strapped it on for a trip.

Check out icon backpacks and tank bags.

One that doesn't allow the wind to open the zippers and leave your gitch on the street...

Get an army/ tactical style pack. usually more modular and rugged than the rest.

Best answer, I use a smallpack, the flap that goes over the top is great for keeping out water, and I've had zippered bags open on me a bunch of times due to the wind to the point where I now tie together the zip pulls if I'm using them. The straps keep everything in tight so it doesn't feel like its there since it moves with you. I'm sure you could get a smallpack from a surplus store for an "ok" price.

Quick search: http://armyissue.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/79/products_id/2526

But you might get one cheaper

I've used all sorts of regular backpacks for short/long hauls with light/heavy loads, by far the best is the Knox 6 Pack Backpack

It has clasps that connect at your upper chest as well as your waist, so it keeps the weight where you want it, reducing back strain

I've used a North Face "Recon" pack for the past two years and would recommend it. It'll hold a decent sized lappy (padded holder inside) and should plenty of your books as well. Seperate pockets for the smaller stuff to keep seperated. It's light and the straps are comfy. Won't cost you a fortune either.

I wouldn't recommend Kriega, after owning r20, r25 the nylon did not last me longer than a year without ripping or fraying.. not to mention lack of interior pockets. Im on a search for something high quality myself now

Used a cheap walmart CCM bag for the last 2 years, held all my heavy text books, and sometimes my ride would be 3 hours if I was coming home for the weekend and hit Toronto traffic. I don't think there's much of a reason to spend a bunch of money on a back pack. If it's too heavy, use a cargo net and strap it to the tail.

I used a Ogio No Drag for 2 years.

- Zips against your back, never had it open on me
- Not much wind drag
- Laptop Compartment
- Upper and lower buckles so it doesn't move around
- Has a helmet bag and headphone port that I've never used
- Well padded, never felt pain with a laptop and 4 textbooks in it
