Hi everyone,

Im getting my m1 exit this weekend and my 60 days will be up June 10th! I'm looking to get a ninja 250 to start on.

Im having some problems determining how to approach getting insurance.
- ill be 24 in a few months
- I was paying $330 a month on insurance on my car and that dropped to 305 after my annual renewal.
- I do however have three convictions, 1major, two minor (silly downtown tickets not knowing where I was going and getting caught in the wrong place at the wrong time)
- these tickets won't come off my abstract for another two years..

so my reduced renewal rate when thru so I'm assuming my insurance company hasnt looked at my abstract, and id like to keep it that way lol.

So here's what I wanna know but afraid to ask the insurance companies
-if I was to take out a policy with my current company for a bike would they work off my current file or will they look at my abstract and both rates will go up (car and bike)
-if I was to go to another company for my bike would my current car insurance company be notified and flagged and my car rate would go up?
- would getting my 27 year old sister with a clean record to get her m1 take out insurance and put me as a secondary driver an options?

Thanks!

1. they'd most likely look up your record, if you did not declare them your insurance (car) may be outright cancelled.

2. no, that would not happen

3. this has been covered. rate is based on highest risk driver, you, and not your sister.

3600/yr car insurance + 2000 (give or take) for a bike, that 5600 a year in insurance alone.

thats ridiculous.

Your record will definetly be checked and rated for when it comes to your new bike policy. The companies I mostly work with (Jevco and Facility Association) would both accept you and then surcharge the premium accordingly based on your record. Your auto insurance company would not be notified. Since the renewal already went out on the auto insurance, chances are that they won't look at your abstract until next year - at which point they may either raise premium or cancel you depending on what their underwriting threshold is.

I can bet that an under-25yo operator with a major conviction and two minors is going to cost a lot of money :S

thanks for the replys and the information! I got a few options but things are looking pretty grim, out of curiosity ill stop by statefarm this week and get a quote to see what the ball park is looking like.

Don't forget to bring one of these with you.

I don't think you qualify for State Farm. Here's a rough flowchart I put together to determine whether or not you qualify for SF. If you qualify for State Farm, it will also attempt to tell you what tier you are in (i.e. Plan A or Plan B) :)

vifferfun you are correct, I don't qualify for statefarm, went in yesterday and they have a 2 ticket limit. So I had a lawyer/paralegal hand me his card when I went for my last ticket at eglinton and said they can get rid convictions on your record within a certian time (www.lawhelpinfo.com), to be honest the website looks sketchy and even when I called it looked sketchy but figured this might be my only hope of riding this season. They said i gotta send them a copy of my abstract and then they'll send me my quote. When i got my abstract, to my surprise, one conviction i had last year in september didnt show on my record!!!!! so there is only two! So I went back to statefarm and they approved that I can get insurance from the they quoted $157 a month. So I looks like I may be riding afterall this season :p

Once you plead guilty (either by paying the fine or by being proven in court) I didn't think that a conviction could be reversed.

Was it the MAJOR conviction that disappeared from your record? From what I understand, SF won't write you if you have a Major conviction on your record.

well the one ticket I though was major ended up being minor, so its two minor tickets. That law firm can only reverse the conviction if you plead non-guilty and take it to court and lose, they can withing a certian number of days (usually 45) have it removed from your record. (thats according to them)

Well, two minors is certainly a much better situation than you originally posted! You're lucky that you don't have a major.
