What to do with an old helmet?

I have a 2011 Shoei helmet in a pretty good condition but I know that most people recommend retiring the helmet after about five years.I also heard that it depends on the condition of the helmet itself. The helmet has been kept mainly indoors and left in storage the past couple of years.

What would you recommend doing with it? Can one still sell it for cheap? Or is it not safe to do so? And if it is time to dispose of it what are the options for doing so? Can it be recycled somehow for example?
 
I have a blue Shoei X-11 Kagayama that I bought because it looks cool. It's too old to use now, but it still looks cool, so I just look at it.

I tried this with 2 fire stations and an ambulance station. None of them wanted it. They thought it was a good idea, but didn't know the procedure for accepting used helmets. Anyone have success in doing this?
 
Call any First Aid Company that teaches.
I have taught and removed different types of helmets on Students and in real life.
Very important not to compromise "C" spine control. Could be the difference between life and death.
Not sure now because of Covid if anybody wants a strangers helmet.
Not many courses being taught now. Some re-certs. Under special circumstances.
If you are doing a F/A course take all your helmets with you. Bike, Ski/Snowboard. Motorbike, etc.

I know the Toronto Fire Academy doesn't want them, they have a deal with one of the distributors to take leftover brand new helmets.

Yep, a couple years ago i collected helmets from here to donate to the FD for training.
Only received like 2 if i remember correctly and they were older.

If they are newer style helmets, i could dig back into this and see if training wants them again or not. But with COVID they may be a little timid on accepting such things currently .. if there is a few people wanting to donate i could re open this up and investigate?

No first aid company is teaching "how to remove a helmet". You are taught to keep it on until first responders arrive. With CPR now going compression only, no need to remove the helmet anymore.

Covid transmission via contact with an object seems extrodinarily unlikely at this point. The contact studies I have seen didnt have any virus after seven days or less. The reasonably simple solutio is an object quarantine (throw then in a locker for a week or two) or just spray them with disinfectant.

Ski Patrol have been teaching helmet removal as we are EMS on the hill. ABC`s and the possibility on vomiting.
Admittedly Ski Patrol are the exception to the rule as it is Advanced First Aid.
#1 priority After scene survey, Airway.
I used to teach helmet removal when I was teaching BTLS. (The name has changed to International Trauma Life Support)At Toronto Ambulance HQ. Eastern Avenue.
Which is open to Advanced First Aiders. Fire Fighters.
Not required as you say, for the layperson.
Required for HCP. (Health Care Provider)

P.S. You did a fantastic job when you moved my Girlfriends bike. A few years ago. Highly recommended.
