What to do after a Hit n Run?

Hi,

I park on the street and returned to my bike after the weekend to find the following note:

"Hey, a (description of the truck that was involved) backed into your bike and knocked it over, license plate ......."
There is no contact info, or time or date it happened.
All I have is a colour and model of truck and it's license plate
I knew something was wrong once I saw it on the kickstand instead of the centre stand.

There is some damage, but that's not what bothers me, it's the fact that the person just left.

What should I do in this situation?
Anyone have experience in the situation?

thx in advance

Unfortunately without some sort of contact info, the note is pretty much useless. You're stuck either fixing it yourself or putting it through your insurance under collision, if you have it.

Unless there's video evidence, that is. No chance of a camera in the area?

The contact info is what I'm badly missing...

It's not worth fixing on my tab.
no cameras as it was on the street.
Looks like i'm SOL on this one.

It's worth going back to take a look though. Apartment buildings, businesses, and private homes can all have video security.

If it was a residential street you could try to go door to door (If there isn't many) and see if anyone there wrote the note?

a few weeks back i witnessed a vehicle back into another vehicle on a side-street near my home; i stopped and recorded the license plate... called Peel Regional Police, who then advised that the victim-vehicle was parked outside the owners house and to ring the bell... i rang, no answer... Peel Police tried calling the home, no answer... they advised to leave a note on the victim vehicle, and said it was their responsibility to report the hit-and-run; Peel Police didn't even ask for the other vehicle's license plate

i left my e-mail address rather than my full name and SIN; the owner got back to me a few days later through e-mail and advised he worked it out with the other driver and thanked me for leaving the note

Well you have the plate number, look up the owner, tell them you know they hit your bike and took off and ask them if they want to settle it out of court.

They may call your bluff but they will probably be crapping themselves that they were tracked down and just pay up... or maybe not...

Report it to the local Police Department. Let them decide if there is evidence to lay a charge after the Speak to the Registered Owner of the Vehicle that hit you.

if u got a Private Investigators license, you can go to the ministry of transportation with that info that you have and look up the license plate yourself :) i think they charge like 10$ or 15$ for that service. but at least you will know who the car is registered to and where they live.

report it to the police. sorry you dont have witness contact info... that really helped me in a case similar to your own...

Report to Police. Make note to point out any paint colours or identifying damage. A good police officer will follow up and contact the vehicle owner, and view the other vehicle for signs of damage and if that damage is suitable for the collision. Unfortunately, most police officers are massively lazy when it comes to doing a proper investigation, and it is more than likely no action will be taken - they'll just provide the report number to you and not think about the case ever again, so don't get your hopes up.

I don't disagree with you that some police officers are lazy but your statement is definitely uncalled for and useless given the request from the OP. Most police officers are massively lazy? Do you work for the department as a Detective Constable to know that for a fact? Do you know for sure when they receive a complaint and take no action at all to conduct a proper investigation? or are you just saying what you "think" they do. These investigation are usually forwarded towards the traffic division of a police service. That division normally specialize in motor vehicle death, incidents and collisions and the one mentioned..hit and runs. If witnesses, plate information, make, model and all / some essential information are provided by the complainant, a investigation will be conducted. The main piece of evidence of a "Plate" would benefit the investigation. Without a plate or other essential what do you want them to do? Are you suppose to pull the clues from thin air? Or would you have them lay charges against innocent people to please the complainant. So come on, use some discretion in what you type.

To the OP:

Submit the information you have provided. File a report with the police within the jurisdiction. If you have a plate number, that would be the most useful information available.
