What to check when buying a used engine

I am about to purchase an engine this week and I just wanted to clarify what I should check for before proceeding. The owner told me that its running but thats about it. I will bring my compression tester with me..anything else I should check for? engine has only 3k on it as per the odometer.

Apparently you can't get great compression readings unless you spin the engine quickly.

Ask the owner if the engine still has oil in it. If so, jump the starter relay with a battery and jumper lines to spin the engine and take the compression reading. If not, bring some oil and make sure you have plugs for any bolts (oil cooler bolts, drain bolt, etc.)

If you can't crank the engine, at least make sure it turns by hand. But this is risky since you can't get a really accurate compression reading.

with 3k the compression should be fine...the thing is barely broken in.

Leakdown test gives you more information on the condition of the engine and doesn't require you to spin the engine (much, you have to rotate to TDCC for each cylinder). It does require a source of compressed air (a portable tank works fine).

Why is the engine being sold? Crashed bike? Ask to see the guages to check odometer. Is the engine in a bike or sitting on the floor?

the bike is sitting now. it was just taken out of the bike this week. they said the odo reads around 3k. but since its disconnected now and I haven't seen the engine in the bike ,I'm skeptical to buy it without checking something..I don't have compressed air..all I have is a compression gauge. in picking up the engine tomorrow.
