what is the OBD II equivalent on a motorcycle?

You know on cars we have that OBD 2 port. What is the one on bikes called and I assume it would be under the seat. I have a 2013 kawi z1000 and would like to do some fun winter project. What kind of protocol does it use? I am a computer engineer so I am ok with designing hardware and writing software. I just need some info on the port.

thanks

Bikes don't have a common standard. Aprillia/piaggio/Vespa share one protocol, BMW has a different protocol, I'm not sure about the rest. It would be convenient if they all shared a protocol.

Doesn't Kawi have race Ecu's which are easy to connect to? Looking at the race Ecu's info may provide you with some insight.

Some bikes actually do use OBDII - some Harley's, Triumphs

They do, so does suzuki, getting the communication cables ($$$) and being able to get the ecu to connect to a computer is definitely not easy though. I'm sure a computer engineer could figure it out.

Most japanese bikes have a dealer mode that will give you fault codes etc. You can use a paperclip...

Triumph is easy to access with a cable and third party software.

Well I have a kawi so would love if anyone knows something about the port or any technical documentation.

Kawi uses a diagnostic plug like suzuki. There's a few different offerings to reflash your ecu depending on your model of bike.

the regular automotive scanner will not scan a harley the connector is different

It's not only the connector but important thing is protocol whether it's can bus or iso. But I found out that kawi port is called kds port. Gotta figure out protocol now.

If you find anything I wouldn't mind knowing as well. I can put a scope on mine, but without anything for it to talk to I doubt I'll get any data.
