Went down, what should I check?

Hey all,

Went down a couple weeks ago, lowsided left side (2012 Kawasaki 250) doing around 50 kph, just wondering at that speed, what should I look for in regards to frame damage? The shifter got pushed in but was able to be pulled out by stepdad when he picked up bike. He said he was able to start it up fine later, just wondering when my clavicle finally heals up what should I check, look for, etc? I'm not very mechanically inclined but my step brothers and step dad are.

Thanks in advance.

Bent forks, or forks that are tweaked inside the triples. Good advice I was given was to loosen the pinch bolts on the triples and shake out any stiction then line them up and tighten again. Do this even if they don't appear out of whack.

Also, take apart the upper fairing and look for damage to the brackets/subframe/headlights. There is bound to be something broken in there. Keep an eye on the engine side covers if they got scraped at all. Mine was leaking after my crash but I didn't notice until months later during a track day.

Of course, make sure all the controls are functional, steering turns lock to lock, etc...

Also, bleeding the brakes wouldn't be a bad idea.... chances are the calipers got a good shock and could have taken in some brake dust through the seals or bubbled some air in the lines.

And take a look at the pegs, rearsets, clipons and levers for any cracks... replace if necessary.

Every crash is a little different that another.

Really, a full inspection of the entire bike needs to be done, from front wheel to forks, to all control surfaces, the brakes, rear swingarm and suspension, and rear wheel. All has to be straight, working properly etc.

If you do not know how to take care of this, do not try and guess - take your bike to a shop and have them do an inspection for you to make sure the damage doesn't run deep.

If the bike fails later on because of damage you did not locate, you could be seriously hurt, or you could seriously hurt someone else. Don't let that be on your concience, especially just so you could have saved a few bucks.

Lastly, you have an obligation to reveal to a future buyer of the bike that it was involved in an accident, and what was affected and repaired. And don't do the old "it fell over in the driveway" story - we've all heard that one a million times :) :) :)

check you bank account and make sure you have enough $$ for the repair.... LOL

just kidding.....

strongly suggest to take it to a shop and have a professional to check it out for you.

Would you like to hear the irresponsible answer?

Ride it and try not to fall off again. If it's harder to do that because it vibrates or pulls one way or the other now you've got a new excuse for the next time you have a get off.

I spoke to a guy that owns a shop that I know, he said he will check all the major stuff for like $85, so I think I will buy a CAA membership and get it towed down to get checked.

Thanks for the help guys.
