Well that was close... one reason to practice

I don't post much but what the hell.. Yesterday was a beautiful day. Decided to boot up north for the day to take in the sights up there. Figured with holiday that the 400 wouldn't be as bad as it normally is in the summer... wrong! Guess everyone had the same idea as me (in hindsight a pretty dumb assumption.. I don't go that way often). So riding up the 400 it was heavy but moving well. Then about 15 cars up it looked like a car changed lanes without looking and ran someone into the guardrail. So of course everyone behind this slams on their brakes. Of course being the 400 in heavy traffic nobody actually bothers to leave a truly appropriate amount of following space so things get tight in a hurry. The guy in front of me just narrowly manages to avoid rear ending the car in front of him, but it looks like the guy behind me is about to come right up my @$$... so I ease up slightly on the brakes to give myself a little bit more control for turning and ducked in between the car in front of me and the car in the lane to the right of me. The car that was behind me stops short of the car I was following but I don't think I would have fit in between! Riding through the $4!7 storm of cars I saw at least two others that actually did get rear ended in the panic stop.

Anyway, scared the hell out of me to say the least! Wish I hadn't just bought a coffee as the adrenaline was way more a wake up than coffee ever could be!

I've found myself bored riding around a few times and decided to find an empty lot to practice just such a scenario... emergency/threshold braking, quick turns, and combinations of the two. I think that's what really saved my bacon. Also thank goodness I had the mindset to avoid target fixation on the bumper in front of me..

So remember people, practice practice practice! I haven't even done it as much as I would have liked but it was still an immense help. And it's never to late to do it either, you never know when you'll need it.

After that it was pretty much the beautiful day I had hoped for, did about 700k in Muskoka and Haliburton Highlands area, beautiful!

Ride safe out there everyone and enjoy the rest of the season!

I avoid Hwy 400 like the plague, unless I'm on it super early.

Weston Road from King to Hwy 9, then 5th Sideroad, between Hwy 9 and Innisfil Beach Sideroad is a nice alternative.

Shhh....

yea practice is good...

Hit a really really tight on ramp fast yesterday, had that half second "oh **** its tight" moment, but then it was an automatic override with that little voice in my head saying "when you don't think you can lean any further, lean just a little bit further..."

Highways are gonna be loaded every long weekend. And yeah, in accordion stops like that I pretty much assume the car behind me won't stop in time and pull up beside the car in front if I can

Reads like your quick response saved your bacon. I know how sometimes one can become complacent too. I found myself doing just that at rural stop signs. Just kind of relaxed and not really in the ready to ride position or frame of mind. Trying to get out of that bad habit with constant mirror checks.

I don't know how you guys run the 400 highways. I've jumped on the 403 a few times from Burlington to #6 and loth it.

Unfortunately it's the quickest way from point A to B....for me if I plan on going riding anywhere decent it means 400 to the destination....ride around...and 400 back. Mind you I typically leave TO around 6:30-7am to beat any traffic.

Yeah I've been driving down the 401 in my car and had to slam the brakes for a sudden stop. I think, "Someone's gonna get rear ended." Watch my mirror to see if it's going to be me. Car behind manages to stop. Car behind him wasn't so good and slammed into him. Parts go flying. I pull over since I just witnessed this. Woman that rear ended the guy behind me gets out, looks at her car with the entire front end mashed up, coolant pouring out, steam rising from the engine, "Think I can drive it home?"

No ma'am. That thing's likely going to the dump. I suggest you call your husband.

Did you offer to take her home, I mean if she was good looking and all.....ease her pain on the loss of her car....2nd option should have been to tell her to call her husband...
