Welding question

Hey Everyone,

I know there have been past posts about welding, but this is a little more specific.

I have inherited my grandma's lamp which is made out of brass, and runs on 220/240v. I want to restore it, and convert it to our standard of 120v.

As it's old, I'm guessing there is lead in it.

Has anyone in this forum have experience in welding brass? Is it dangerous welding brass that's got lead in it? If so, what should I look out for, to minimize damage to the lamp?

It not worth much, but has sentimental value.

To convert to 120v, it's probably just a bulb and plug change (although depending on age, you may want to completely rewire). If rewiring, adding a ground connection to the body would be a great idea for safety.

How visible is the broken area? Silver solder is probably the easiest repair, tig with brass rod the least visible. I'm going to assume you don't have the correct rod and gas or you wouldn't be asking the question so if you want the least visible repair, you will be paying someone and lead doesn't matter.

Pics of the repair that needs to be done would be helpful.

I've been doing silver soldering for decades and I'm still posting on GTAM. Is that a good or bad sign?

The last thing I soldered was a metal cutting band saw blade that got used in a wood cutting band saw (10 X too fast). It worked.

PM me if you need some silver solder.

For bits and pieces there is a vintage lamp place in Cambridge for odd ball parts.
