Tapes are accurate to a standard of 0 to +1/32 over 6'. 1% error on a measuring device is a very big deal, so lucky for us the most they'd be out is 1/24 of an inch.Tape measure accuracy: Consider that a common stud is 96" long and trimmed to 93". If two carpenters were cutting the studs using different tapes, accurate to +/- 1%, one could be cutting 92" and the other 94".
My dad had an old cloth 100' tape measure. I was confused by some numbers I was getting with it. 100' on the tape was about 115' in reality.
