Weird Battery/starting Problem

Battery (newish) goes very dead within about 2 weeks.
All I get is a buzzing noise when I try to start - won't even turn over.

I charge the battery and now barely turns over, not enough to start.
Two chargers, one from Cdn Tire and the other from Yuasa are showing the battery as charged.

I can start the bike no probs if I leave the battery hooked up to the charger. Turns over fine when I do that.

Bike is low mileage 2007 Kawi ZZR600.

Does this ring any bells?

Sounds like your newish battery is done. How old is it? Most lead batteries should last 2-4 years if properly maintained. If the battery has sat for a long period with out use or charging it could be replacement time.

Hi Glen:

From Canadian Tire about a month ago.

Is there a way I can confirm that it's dead - or are you pretty sure that's the case (and I do know that you know a thing or two about batteries)?

Take it back to Canadian tire and have them load test it. The battery is still under warranty if its pooched they should give you a new one. If they give you a new one make sure they charge it properly. Battery needs to be filled, left for an hour then charged. If they fill and charge immediately youll end up going back in a month or two and get another :)

thanks Glen. They filled and charged immediately, since I picked it up within an hour and it was charged.

I owe you.

The initial reaction of adding the acid causes the battery to heat up. Charging the battery also causes heat, so the risk is overheating and warping a plate causing an internal short therefore short life. If all else fails the instructions should be followed. But you'll get another chance on this one.

When the acid is added a chemical reaction (the heat) needs to happen before charging. There is a chemical coating the plates that acts both as an activator and life extender of the battery. There are also separators between the plates that need time to absorb the acid in the op's battery completely. Depending on size of battery you need to give it 30-60 minutes for this to occur.

Just buy your battery from GLEN @ FS....let him pre-charge it for you.

If you have issues...he will stand behind what he sells.

Yep. That's what I did. And then a couple main fuses. And now, after some diagnostics, I'll be getting a regulator/rectifier. Maybe a stator - hope not...still need to test my existing one. Good guy, Glen.

So of course Glen was right. The battery was pronounced dead, three months after purchase. CT wouldn't allow a credit but did replace it with a new one - which I filled and charged myself. CT staff did not know about the wait period, although it's clear in the instructions.

Next time, just buy from Glen.
