Wasps in my bike-lshed - recommendations for kiling'em

Hi everyone,

I built a wooden shed for my bike last year. My bike's had a minor ailment in the recent while, so I haven't been in there in a week... and I went in today to find two small hives crawling with wasps! F_____!

Just FYI, I'm not allergic, but I hate them.

How do I off these MF'ers without becoming a pin cushion?

I set up two traps just like these (http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Wasp-Trap), one with nasty pork and water, the other with fruit juice. No nibbles yet but I'm hopeful.

Other than that, the plan is to wait for a cooler night this week, unload a can of raid and run away quickly.

Any other suggestions? What kind of clothing is hard for them to sting through? I thought about riding gear...

I get a few small nest around the back of my house. I found fantastic works really well, spray the nests and run if your successful they will be gone and not come back.

they sell foaming sprays at all hardware stores
they are about $10 and you can completely drown/suffocate them from about 6-10 feet away (in safety)

Brake Cleans. The good flammable stuff, not the sissy low odor non-flammable junk.

Kills the almost instantly, seems to melt their wings right off. They will drop right out of the air. A quick blast into the hive takes care of it.

I think you missed the part of wooden shed, the last thing you need is a Bon fire with the bike inside :)

+1 I used it many times and it works very well

I think Torren means just the brake cleen itself not actually lighting it but it cost about the same as the foaming spray.

Raid Max "Hornet and Wasp" ensure to get specific hornet and wasp stuff. Kills them dead! (hehehe) really works well. I have a terrible phobia for wasps and such adn will brave a nest with this stuff in hand. You can actually spray them while they are flying and they just drop... stone dead... right out of the air.

+1 on the foaming wasp spray. I had a paper wasp nest half the size of a basketball hanging off the soffit of my house a few years ago. Wait till after dark, they will be all home and not flying around, then blast'em. Get a good 5 or 10 second blast in to coat the nest. Hit the opening first so they cant get out, then cover the rest with foam. Wait an hour or so and go back to finish them off. The next day knock the nests down.

Thanks everyone. You're helping me overcome my fear here....

The stuff I have is a spray, but it's not the foaming type. I'll have a look for the foaming stuff specifically.

I have brake cleaner (the nasty, pungent type) and will keep that can handy as well.

Wed/Thurs are supposed to be cooler at night so I'll try then.

the stuff that squirts (non foaming) is also good). spray the nest when it's dark.

Ya, very important to spray after dark. All the bee's will be dormant and in the hive, so you won't miss any with the spray :)

as far as wearing your gear, thats a great idea. Wear one of those spine protectors that all the sportbike guys love so much. Remember to wear it with a wife beater as well. Because really, who cares about getting a million stings on the arms and shoulders ? you can still have a decent life being armless Its the stings that are directly on your spine that are painfull. protect the spine ! everything else doesnt matter !!!!!!!

All good advice thus far, but we have overlooked the most important, deadly weapon for bee / wasp / hornet warfare - the badmington racket!!!
Choose your favorite and keep a spare one at the ready.

+1 for brake clean. The cheap stuff $2.88/can from Princess Auto works great.
My garage is all wood, so I have both hornets and wood-eating bees to deal with.

ahahaha. Thats what I said to one of my dumbass friends riding in the gay icon vest with a golf tee and denim shorts....I've been down 3 times and every time its been my shoulders, arms and knees that touched down not my spine. And if you go down hard enough for the vest to be beneficial you can best believe your arms and legs are gonna be scraped to ****.

As long as it's a wasp killer spray, it'll work. Soak the nests and you're set.

I've used both the foaming spray and the non-foaming spray. Both were meant for wasps and could shoot about 10 feet. I found both worked really well but the non-foaming spray worked faster to kill the wasps than the foaming did. The foaming spray is good if you have a closed nest to deal with. You spray the opening, like someone mentioned above, to keep them in, then you insert the straw into the nest, through the foam, and hose up the inside.

If you have those honeycomb-type nests, then just hosing 'em down with either spray will work.

Since you'll be in an enclosed shed, you should cover yourself up and try not to breath in the insecticide. The non-foaming spray will splatter. I wore safety goggles and a paper mask along with a hoodie and pants. I also held my breath since my shed was quite small (4 ft x 5 ft). You don't necessarily need to go to that extreme, just be careful.
