Vulcan 500 LTD or Kymco Venox 250 for tall new rider?

Good evening,

I want to get into riding, and I'm planning on writing the M1 next week. I'll be signing up for the safety course at Durham College at the end of June, but in the mean time I'm browsing bikes and trying to decide what to buy. I'm much more interested in cruisers than sport bikes, and I've been especially interested in the Kawasaki Vulcan 500, and the Kymco Venox 250. I had never even heard of Kymco before until I stumbled upon some reviews of the bike, and I've read nothing but good things about the Venox. On the other hand, the Vulcan also seems to be very popular and is from a bit more well known company.

Besides the few sites I've seen reviews on, there doesn't seem to be a lot out there on the Venox. I didn't see much on this board in particular. Can anyone with experience with this bike tell me if they'd recommend it for a first bike over the Vulcan? I have to admit, the reviews make it sound like it has everything I'm looking for in a bike, I just don't know if it's too good to be true. Also, does anyone have experience dealing with Studio Cycle Group, the dealer of Kymco bikes in Toronto?

I went to GP and sat on the Vulcan the other day and it was pretty comfortable, but it did feel a little awkward getting to the rear brake with my foot. Part of that though could also be that there were other bikes on either side so there wasn't much room to move around. I'm 6'3" so I'd like something comfortable and that I won't look like a clown riding.

Thanks a lot, sorry for the rambling post.

NO clue about Kymco but my situation was similar to yours and Vulcan was too small. Suzuki S40 was much better fit and I am about the same height. I suggest you look at that bike too.

cheers!

Uhm, Vulcan 500LTD is much larger than the S40.... By about 10-20% each and every way. Also heavier. S40 is a tiny cruiser.
You sit higher on the Vulcan (about an 1") but the handlebars are shorter so that's where the misconception comes from maybe. You may feel as if you "stick out" more.

Vulcan will be also more agile than the S40 and the Kymco. Stick with the big 4 at any rate. Anything from Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki or Suzuki is better than a Kymco.

This may be different but you may want to try an enduro style bike, straight up ride and great controls position,I bought a KLR and its fast enough and I enjoy the ride, try all the bikes on your course and go from there, good luck.

Since you mentioned it I've been looking into the KLR 650, it looks intriguing. I'm still leaning towards a Vulcan, but it really depends what I can fit on without feeling like my knees are up around my ears.
