Virago Purchase

So I'm looking on Kijiji at the Yamaha XV250 (Virago) and they all seem to have low km's and are fairly cheap, is there something wrong with that type of bike? Or are they just a bike you can buy for a cheap price?

It's priced right for made in China.

It's an entry level bike. It depends on what you mean is a cheap price. Compared to a 500 or 750cc, sure it's cheap.

Compared to the V Star 250, it just seems cheaper by an average of $750 and it seems like the Virago is more likely to have less km, I guess I'm wondering if there's something wrong with the bike.

If i remember correctly, V star 250 replaced Virago 250 about 10 years back and has no significant upgrades apart from the name change.

Virago 250 is probably cheaper since they are older than V star 250s...as to why they might have lesser kms even though they are older- I have no clue.

They are a solid 250 CC starter, definitely better than a Rebel (Honda) , Marauder (Suzuki), or Aquila (Hyosung) .

Beware of 2006 year bikes -- the local market was flooded with a pile of low mileage motorcycle school bikes that were run about 10,000km at low speeds in parking lots. These bikes will have low miles and shiny lights as speedos, headlights and signals were never installed on the school bikes.

Curbsiders bought these up for $500-800, cleaned them up and sold them as low mile bikes. Check the UVIP, stay away from bikes owned by Humber College.

Meaning you can order complete replacement engines from China for 800 to 1000$ US per unit if you order about 10 of them, cheaper if you order a whole container load. Or you can buy virtually the same bike with Lifan written on the tank.

Lifans are Honda copies.
A XV250 Yamaha is a "V" twin.
Not even close.

Niagara College just did the sale in January. About ten 2011-13 V Star 250 all red or black, five or so TU250X seven GW250 Red or black, couple Grom and a few dual sports. Most bikes hit $1300-$1700 tax in Dual sports reached $4500-$5000 Check tire for dates to see. Low mileage stored properly so most will still have them on when flipped. Picked up a 2013 TU250X to mod and ride.

they are a starter bike
as such, don't get ridden much or owned for long

being a cruiser accentuates this
cruiser riders look for big torque displacement once they get their feet under them
whereas a sport rider will be happy with a 250 for longer
nothing wrong with them

don't get side tracked by the China discussion
has nothing to do with a Yamaha Virago

@madmike what's the issue with the school bikes exactly? If someone was to get them cheap enough?

I'd buy one if it's very cheap. The only problem is all the kms are done by newbies not exactly treating the motorcycle gently, and the bike might have been dropped many times.

From my understanding, heavily dropped and abused extensively due to the learners doing their learning thing. I believe most schools repair them prior to selling, but you can only do so much to a vigorously dropped machine.
