Vintage Yoshimura exhaust resto help.

Finally was able to acquire a Yosh system that has been long discontinued for my 1990 GSXR. It seems a bit rough but nothing some TLC couldn't take care of. Couple of questions I had:

1. What is the best way to blast and treat the surface to restore it to its former finish? (Soda Blast and Ceramic Coat?)

2. The balancer cans are in decent shape however, is there a gasket that goes between the cans and the header? From the pics you can see there is something in there.

3. There seems to be a small dent on one of the head pipes however it does not seem to affect the flow while looking from the inside. Can anyone confirm this? Can this be knocked back out somehow?

4. Where can I acquire or use alternate springs to attach the head pipe to exhaust pipe?

any help is appreciated.

3. Don't worry about that tiny dent, it won't affect performance at all. If you are really concerned about it's appearance, you may be able to get a paintless repair tool of the pipe and try to push it out, but any headers I have seen had metal too thick to try this. If it really bothers you, the cheapest solution is likely to fill the dent with a weld and grind it smooth.

Other people will be able to provide much better advise than i can about your other questions.

Thanks Grey,

Yeah Im not too worried about the dent to be honest and when you look inside the collector it does not seem to affect flow at all.

My main concern I guess is the gaskets that go between the balancer cans and the header. Not sure what they are made off or where I can get them?

Can you pull the crossovers off so we can see what we are working with? As pressure should be low and temperature high, my current thought is pieces of a door seal from a wood burning fireplace, but there may be better solutions.

Yeah definitely grey,

Gonna do that this weekend. Thats a good idea you had with the door seal. I could just cut it to size with an exacto.

Your right, The pressure cant be that High if a spring holds them in place. I'm honestly not sure what the balance cans did but alot of performance pipes had them back in the day.

Just trying to restore the 90 back to its former glory with some modifications.

I did find that I can get some various lengths of spring from yoshimura still.

my dents were too big, so I just wrapped and painted the header and cleaned up the can...

So I got the system apart a bit. Had some surprises.

I'm not an expert but it does look like 2 of the balancer cans are damaged,1 more than the other( Port 3 and 4). It explains the silicone that was around the washers that I found.

Not sure at this point if I am going to weld and re-drill the holes or weld closed with cans on??? Advice?

As far as the washers go, they seem to resemble Belleville washers so I'm going to see if I can get them at Fastenal. They seem to have everything lol.

Some specs and pics( Might help someone):

Small pipe to cans: Length :13mm, Out.Diameter: 14mm, ID : 10mm

Belleville Washer: OD: .875 inch, ID(narrow portion) .55 inch, Thickness: 1.5mm

Balancer Cans Retaining spring length:35mm
