Any suggestions / recommendations for places to see / things to do / look out areas in Vermont?

Might be a weekend trip at most...prfer to stay away from big cities unless traffic isn't too bad...

VT 17 is the one if you want twisties - I've run it numerous times, mostly successfully :)

Route 100 is nice - sweepers and scenic, not particuarly challenging but enjoyable.

If you are looking at just a weekend, both these routes are fairly close to the NY state border.

Monticello and Burlington are both scenic cities, but slow to drive through and tourist traps - again if you are looking at a weekend, you probably don't want to spend too much time crawling through the cities.

I suggest you combine a Adirondack/Vermont loop that is easily doable in 3 days. First night Lake George. Then over to Vermont to do a four hour loop. To get there from Lake George, go north on 9N to the Chimney Point Vermont free ferry crossing. Then go north east on 17 to 100. You then go south on 100 until you reach 125. From there you take 125 west back to your point of origin at Chimney Point. This route takes you into the highest twistiest elevations in Vermont. I would then head north west into Adirondack Park towards Lake Placid where you could climb Whiteface and explore surrounding roads before heading home westward on 3 out of Lake Placid. Try to avoid staying over during weekends as hotels are pricey at this time. If you're camping then that won't be a problem. Good Luck.

anyone want to do a weekend trip? Leave early AM sat morning?

+1 on route 17

I followed it East leaving NY, climbing Stark Mtn was a thrill. Then took 100 up and camped in Morrisville.

Thumbs up on this route - gives you a lot of bang for your buck in a short time frame. KOA in Lake Placid is really nice - one of the few KOA's I'd give a recommendation for if you want more than cookie cutter. In Lake George I've stayed at Schroon River campgrounds (there are actually 2 of them and they are actually closer to Warrensburg than Lake George) - nice campground there as well. Both places have camping cabins as well, but I think in the summer they might have 2 day minimums in effect - though if you roll in for a night and they have one available, you can still scoop one.e
