Valve stem replacement?

I need to replace the valve stems on my bike and I've decided to put on some fancy pants 90 degree ones. I don't have a means of breaking the bead on the tire, nor do I want to come up with some sort of contraption to do so.

I've seen a few videos of people using woodworking clamps to squeeze the tire where the stem is and manage to replace it that way.

Does that method actually work? What other methods are available?

CONTRAPTION!

Rig-it up!

I use a 2x4 and a carriage bolt to my shed wall as a lever.

You could use a c-clamp. You're going to need a big one for a 180+ rear tire.

Some Youtube videos show driving over the bead with a car... I'm not brave enough to try that...

I'd just wait until your next tire change. If your stems are leaking and you have to do it now then just take your wheels to Rosey Toes or to Mikeymoto. I'd got 90 degree stems at Mikeymoto while doing a tire change. It was $20/wheel for the tire swap out and $20/wheel (including the cost of the part itself) for the anodized stem install. IMHO the hassle of doing a manual tire change not worth savings of $20/wheel.

Theoretically, HD Quick clamps can get up to 600 lbs of clamping force. In practice, I doubt it. That being said, three or four of them and I don't see how the bead could stay in place. Based on the video above, something like 150 lbs at 3:1 works so the solution needs ~450lbs clamping pressure (plus a bit more as clamps have no dynaice component).

Next tire change won't be until next year, at least. The valve stem on the rear tire releases air as soon as I touch it. I figure it's a good idea to replace it sooner than later.

Then pop the tire off the rim and do it properly.

Orangeville.

Based on what wingboy and Matt have said, those are your best options if you need to get it done now, otherwise ya, wait until your next tire change and get it taken care of.
And do yourself a favour and get 45 degree valve stems.

I read some negative reviews on the 90 degree stems. I have no personal information as I’ve never used them. Straight stems are a mild inconvenience but have never really caused me any issues.

I'm in the Caledon-Brampton-Georgetown vicinity and I have a proper bead breaker that you can use (and an air compressor to seat the bead again afterward). Just get yourself and the wheel and the valve stem here. matt365 is in Gtown if that doesn't work out.

The metal 90 degree valve stems are great. Tip (and this is from Kawasaki) ... when you install a 90 degree valve stem, don't install it "aligned" (pointed straight out the side of the bike - either side). Install it at a 45-degree angle facing towards the right side of the bike. It's easier to get an air hose on it that way. My beastie came that way from Kawasaki.

If the stem is still good, why don't you just replace the valve core

Is the valve stem cut? Or does the valve leak when you unscrew the cap?

If it’s the latter, it could just be a loose valve that needs to be tightened up or replaced.
