Valve adjustment

My 2004 gsxr 750 is now past 48,000kms and I feel a valve adjustment is necessary since Suzuki recommends it every 24,000. Around the 24,000 mark I was told to wait till 48k. So here I am once again asking if anyone knows someone who is competent to do valve adjustments or can recommend a shop. I'd rather pay someone cash to save some money over going to a shop but I would like some confidence they know what they're doing since if I go to a shop I have some recourse if my bike blows up as I ride out of their parking lot. Mind you I may have more problems to deal with regardless of where it blows up :)

Please feel free to PM me if you wish to have me contact you should you be someone who can do the job and don't want to post your contact info

You can do it yourself if you feel technically competent. Im sure you would be able to find some DIY instructions. Just remember, if you are not sure about something check three times, try once. Or until you are comfortable. I know from experience as I did my valves on my SV (I checked everything over alot). Generally, you should check them prior to doing the valves, as they may not need adjustment.

I'm pretty technically competent but blew my engine attempting this...think I either reset the cct wrong or hand cranked the engine in the wrong direction...Other than that I'd say its harder to take it all apart and get into the engine than it is to do the actual clearance check and adjustment...
Just pay to get it done proper.

at 20-25k...they will need a adjustment...after that they stay pretty much in spec. Always good to do a check though...

It's really easy to do. Even on my vfr 2004 its easy despite removing and installing the camshaft at least twice only to check the v-tec valve. If you don't feel confortable adjusting them, you can at least check them see if they are within spec.

EDIT: Thank fastar1 for pointing out my mistake :p

How can you say it's easy to do?

Yes the actual measuring is easy... But you have to take apart half the engine, half the plastics, gas tank.. Blah blah..

And then put it all back together.

Have you not seen 95%of the technical questions on this site and most others?? People have problem installing a slip on, windscreens, brakes, spark plugs!!!

Unless you are mechanically inclined with bikes.. I really really do not think its an easy task.

Crankshaft? You sure?

I actualy don't really check this forum, so I don't know the average level of mechanic here. But at least, he can get the manual, remove everything, take his measurement and if he doesn't feel safe to do it, bring it to the mechanic, half of the job is done. It's what I did, I didn't feel safe to check and adjust the valves (my measure didn't make sense...), so I brought my bike, already ready to check and adjust them.

@fastar, sorry its camshaft. :)

Just make sure who ever does it that they put a NEW valve cover gasket on trust me you don't want to be like me **** what a disaster.

I'm a mechanic for a Volvo dealership and I'd say I'm quite mechanically inclined but my bike I don't want to screw with. I don't have the money to replace the engine so I think i'll pay and have it done right.
