Well it’s time to start thinking of getting away for the winter and I’m an early planner.

Any recommendations for the islands? Seems like pricing is rocketing to the moon!

Top pick right now is Mexico for 6k, but Cuba is about 3-4K in comparison.

Obviously food is better in Mexico, but looking to see where else people would recommend for a sunny vacation with 3 kids. Thinking around Feb-April as we’re not tied to any schedule and kids are easily pulled from JK and SK for a week.
 
FYI, friends and family in Mexico have told me that Cancun's prices have gone through the roof lately. It might not be a good option as it was before.
 
Three kids + Mexico or Cuba = diarrhea

It’s really hard to beat Cuba for price , next is Dominican . Cancun is all most to the point you don’t want to leave the resort , it’s gotten sketchy . I like Caribbean islands further south Aruba or Barbados but the price goes way up.
Have you considered a cruise ? Price can be fair , you can see 3-4 different Islands , food is always good . Drink prices may help you stay sober .

We are starting early kinda. Probably DR in the winter. Flying out of KW Wed for Calgary. The usual tourist spots and stay with my cousin at Shuswap Lake a bit. We will come back when we're done.

This is what we’re seeing Cuba < DR < Mexico.

Unfortunately we’re not the type to live off credit so long as we can and do best we can to just pay cash.

Our friends on the other hand…HELOC YOLO type of life. So hard to keep up at times.

We go to Mexico every winter for Christmas 2 weeks at Puerto Morales. We stay at El cid marina there and don't usually go to far with the kids. Has been a good break so far we have 2 years left then we will explore other options.

Going to start looking into flights soon. Last major out of country trip was Singapore, Bali, Malaysia Dec 2019. Pretty sure will be heading back to Thailand this year, have been living vicariously through Youtube vloggers the last couple of years. Going to break up the 30 hour travel time and probably make stop in either Istanbul or Tokyo on way there.

Bali has really been changing the last few years, endless construction eating up the rice fields and more and more traffic on top of what was already a zoo when I was there.
 
Sign up to YYZ deals or YOW,YUL deals on Facebook for airfare sales. There’s been some doozies recently. Colombia for $500, Costa Rica for $435, Dublin for the same. Hotels are pricing themselves out but AirBnB’s down south can still be bargains and way better value.

I keep going back to Panama. Amazing and accessible. Everything Costa Rica has with less tourists. Last place I went to had two buildings with 3 bedrooms, one on/overlooking the beach. Courtyard. 24h groundskeeper on site (no need for keys), outdoor kitchen (plus an indoor one), covered giant palapa with hammocks etc. $150 ish US a night for the lot. Got up at 6am went through the courtyard gate with a chair, plonked it on the beach and watched the sun come up every day with my coffee.

wont catch me getting up at 6am (every day) on vacation!
