Used CB650R or New Trident 660?

Hey guys,

I’ve ridden various road bikes over the span of just over a decade and I’ve settled comfortably on the idea that my type of ride falls within the naked sport bike category. Most of my rides are within the city with the odd weekend jaunt in the country.

Seeing as how these two motorcycles are considered the top contenders in their class which one should I buy?

I sold my Honda cb650r at the beginning of this season because I felt like it was missing something but I could not pinpoint what it was. I settled on a Honda rebel 500 and found out quickly that while it was a fantastic bike, I’m yearning to go back to the more aggressive nature of the naked sport bikes. I’ve realize I took for granted what the CB650r offered.

On the used market in Ontario, Canada a used Honda CB650R with anywhere from 500-5000 miles is the same price as a brand new triumph trident 660.

I’m dead set on one of these two because I’ve owned, ridden and modified to my liking almost all the other bikes in this category and think these two come out on top.

Which one should I get? I appreciate all thoughts and suggestions. I intend on having this bike for the next several years.

Thanks in advance.

out of those 2? Triumph

I'm not really in a rush to sell but at some point I'm going to put my 2015 Street Triple RX (with the Daytona rear subframe and matte silver paint) purchased from GP Bikes with just over 14k km on it. It's my old bike that my wife took over shortly after I got it. These days she'd like something with more wind protection and more touring oriented. I'm thinking FJR. Mostly worried about its weight and size. She's test ridden a goldwing before so she can handle it. But can handle and want to handle are two different things. So haven't really found a perfect replacement yet. I liked the old Honda offerings like the ST1300 but they are so old now and I'd like something a little newer.

Probably not exactly what you're looking for, but with what you're shopping between, might be of interest to you.

Thanks for the responses.

If there wasn’t a lockdown I’d be able to test ride the triumph and compare it to my experience on the CB650R, but unfortunately that scene is gridlocked by the current lockdowns. That’s ideally what I’d like to do.

Have you ridden a street triple? Ergonomics are very similar but slightly more comfort oriented than a street triple. I've ridden a cb650r a few times and have a street triple. I've sat on a trident, that's it. If anything it's a street triple light. Slightly more relaxed rake/trail, I can flat foot both and seat height seemed nearly identical to me but the foot pegs were even more relaxed on the trident.

I would imagine power delivery will definitely feel different between the I3 and I4. But both the cb and the trident have very linear powerbands assuming the trident is the more street oriented version of my 675 engine from which it is based.

To me it's the styling that's the biggest difference with the trident going for a more classic look and the cb a kinda retro modern look. Personally I like the styling of the cb more. But the trident does have a tft screen to the cb's LCD. And in my opinion the finishes are nicer i.e. fasteners, cover pieces, paint, etc. I'm old school and prefer an analogue tach, and tft is probably my least favorite (visibility is harsh sunny weather sucks on tfts). Also you're much more likely to have electrical gremlins with a tft screen (screen shuts off for no reason, reads incorrectly, etc.). So I actually prefer not having a tft screen.
