I am curious, how many km on a bike is considered a lot? I have been looking for a used starter bike and I have seen some interesting choices, but I am completely ignorant of engine life for motorcycles. Anyone have some input?

What type of bike are you looking at?

My personal guess for SS is 60K kms = around 200K kms in a car.... (Some get more some get less)
I have seen blown engines with under 10K kms and I have seen bikes with 250K miles.

No idea when it comes to any other style of bike though.

I was thinking buying a 250, or maybe a 650. Out of curiosity I was wondering about a 600.
 
you will never know if it has been abused,run low on oil,oil changes missed,get a compression test and go from there,or buy a bike with low miles and hope for the best.
 
In my opinion the lower the mileage the better. When ever i get a bike i like to keep it at under 20k. I figure up to that point the only thing the previous owner had to do was oil changes and air filter. After that if you skip valve clearance, plugs etc you can start to run into problems and i prefer to do those things myself so i know they were actually done.

One rule i follow when getting a bike or even a car is that if there is no proof on paper that a specific item was serviced or replaced i assume that it wasnt done. I take this approach because a lot of people will tell you anything just to sell the vehicle.

I don't know about others, but I keep a folder of all the service done to my vehicles. (separate folder for each).
Every receipt, service, etc is recorded. It helps my aging brain from having to remember constantly what I did to which bike or car, but also when it comes time to sell, I hand the folder over to the seller and he's wondering why I'm selling a textbook with the bike lol

For me personally, mileage isn't as big an issue as it once was. I look at the owner and see how they took care of the bike and how knowledgeable they are. If they do all their work at a dealer, its good they have proof. If they do the work themselves, at least show receipts (when possible) of parts.

It's up to you at the end of the day, but mileage isn't that bad with most bikes sold in Ontario, people just don't ride that much.
 
I would say 100k+ easily for a SS, if its taken care of. There's a F4i in the States that I believe has had over 400k on it.

My bike ('07 GSXR600) has 35k on it but never had any issues on it whatsoever. I keep a log of every single thing I do to my bike, what I used, how much it cost, what to look out for, etc. I expect my bike to last for a long long time.
and PS for cars, 200k is not the end if you have a decent car and aren't driving it to s***. A few of my friends with old Honda accords/preludes have 400k+ on their engines. My parent's TL has 270k on it. Buddy bought a G35x with 210k on it and is still driving it. If my car dies out at 200k I'd be very surprised and disappointed.
 
Its about maintenance not mileage. I personally have had bikes with over 200k on them running fine. My R6 had around 78k that I put on in 3 years when I sold it. Figure I put between 25k and 30k on my bike a year....it adds up real fast.
