Usd fork damage on tube

On the right fork (03 gsxr 1000) right at the bottom about an inch tall from the end of the tube, there is 'watermarks' all the way around. That is what they look like at least. They do not rub off and some of the area feels pitted. Any idea what this is? Can try to take a pic during the day.

The DLC for that year is known to have issues like yours with some bikes. It was adjusted in subsequent years. There are a few people who had this issue years ago so you're lucky that it took so long. I have a set of forks that are for an 05/6 that are stock and untouched if you want to replace them for $300... or you can get them re-coated, not sure what that cost is. I am not SURE that they are the same fork as on the 03/4 so you'll want to check that.

I just got these to put on my project bike, seller listed them as 'straight may need seals' which they do.

I guess at this point I just have to wait for his reply.

See if you can return them. Mine have good seals and the DLC is perfect.

BUT... if not... then as long as they don't leak, use them. That being said, I imagine they will leak and replacing seals won't stop it because of the pitted fork surface... but who knows?

Depands how you ride and set up you suspension, they are good kayaba forks wich will fit same from 03 to 08. If you track it, leaks will be permanent, street on the other hand might get away with what it is.

Just checked and a few things are different:

Is it just a matter of spacers? Rim is from an 01-02 w/ 03/04 rotors.

at $300 thats a great deal for complete forks.

DLC coating is expensive, Johnnyp has done some DLC in the past - but I don't think it turned out too well. Belive he went the anodizing route which turned out well. But if you want to get the tubes redone, you'd be paying for a rebuilt + seals + coating, which will cost over $300.

Whats the issue with using the current forks? are they leaking? That's quite far down on the tubes to have any stiction issues.

I paid $275usd inc shipping for these, with top and bottom triple. Hopefully he is willing to work with me otherwise I have to file an eBay dispute.

These are for my 78 gs750, current forks are leaking like a faucet on it, wanted USD :)

I think it's just the spacers that are different but I won't lay money on it, I think the 03-06 forks are pretty well identical.

07/08 is not, and 09 saw BPF. There is a 56mm upper diameter vs. 54mm IIRC.

And you're right about the price, I think I'll raise it to $400. :P Let me know how it works out, my original offer stands. There's even fresh oil in them. ;)

Is that with the nitride coating? I was thinking of putting that on my 750

Can't anodize the actual fork tube, you have to get it DLC'ed if you want them black.
I just saw his 13 636 the other day and the DLC fork tubes turned out great, not a single blemish.
It was about $225/tube so $450 for just the DLC.

Wonder how the seller will handle that, lol. That is nearly what I paid for the forks and triples.

Usually with this kind of stuff it's buyer beware unless you bought them from somebody reputable off the forum.
Good luck.

Got them off ebay, damage was undisclosed so if he does not want to be reasonable I will just file a dispute.
