UPS - Have they changed their brokerage rates?

I'm getting a package from the UK that's worth about $1000.

The company only ships UPS so I generally clear UPS packages myself as there is a CBSA office right across the street from the office.

I phoned UPS to let them know I would clear it and to send me the commercial invoice, and they said that the total amount owing was $130.47 in tax. Total payable would be $140.47 if I let them clear it and that their brokerage fee is $10.

WTF, they used to charge an arm and a leg.

I'm still going to clear it myself, just for spite. That $10 will buy a couple of beers. :)

Maybe because it's coming from the UK it's different?

Possibly, that could make a difference. It is shipping through Louisville, KY though.

I remember I had a couple of shocks shipped from California in May and they wanted $175 for brokerage :(

There are UK companies that only ship UPS?!

According to this (http://www.ups.com/media/en/ca/rate_guide_ca.pdf - Page 71):

Free – When UPS Customs Brokerage handles your imports, there is no Entry Preparation Fee for routine customs clearance ofUPS Worldwide Express Plus, UPS Worldwide Express, UPS Worldwide Express Saver and UPS Worldwide Expedited shipments, including up to five classification lines.

the $10 is the minimum fee charged for bonding the shipment (2.7% to CBSA).

TL;DR nothing has changed with UPS, it's because it's coming via worldwide shipment.

Pretty sure it's anything shipped via air. The rapeage was always with ground shipping

Depending on what type of shipping service they used, Ive had international packages come from Europe without the crazy brokerage fee. I believe if you use certain types of international express they waive the brokerage fees all together, but when you order from the US they rape you!

It all depends on shipping fee and service .... higher premium service costs more, but blends more into it. But you would not know perhaps because it was prepaid by the shipper ...

Generally, low value shipments cost flat fee to clear and do NOT vary per country of origin. It's a cost to clear it, doesn't matter what and where it came from .... as simple as that.

+1 this is likely why. Years ago delivery guy told us brokerage is waived when shipping air. Costs more for freight but save total dollars

It's not waived .... never is, nobody will do anything for free. They just blend the same fees in, that's all.
