Uploading GoPro to Youtube

Hey all,

I used my GoPro HD for the first time yesterday at the track and am in the process of trying to convert and upload the content.

I am currently making videos that are about 2GB in size for 15 minutes of Video, which is a .wmv file.

I am using Windows Movie Maker, obviously crap but it's already on my machine.

It has been uploading 1 file to Youtube for about 8 hours now... It hasn't screwed up, it's actually still going.. I can't believe it myself, really... never seen an http connection last that long without screwing up.

Anyhow, what do you guys do to upload your content?? Because I know I must be going about this all wrong. Thanks.

Seems about right for an HD video
Next time don't up load in 1080p
Compression is killing you

I try to keep mine to 720p and under 10min

I've found that uploading to YouTube directly from Movie Maker, it compresses the video first to some pre-defined low resolution then uploads, so it ends up taking forever plus you end up with an ordinary old SD video in the end anyways. I'm no expert but Movie Maker seems pretty simple so I don't think I'm missing any special setting or anything.

download Handbrake. When you are done editing and saving in WMV open handbrake and re-compress it using H.264. The file will be much smaller and easier to upload but still 1080p or 720p (whichever you want). The reason it takes so long is because your upload bandwidth sucks. Youtube will take your H.264 file and re-compress it again. If you want to keep the quality up, upload it to Vimeo.

This is not the best way to do it but it's the easiest.

First off - how long is your video, and what was the final filesize you were uploading? (i'm guessing it must be close to 1 Gig if it's taking THAT long... either that, or you have a very slow upload limit).

Next - which GoPro mode were you recording in? (ie 720p wide, 720p narrow, 30fps, 60fps, etc).

I agree with the poster above - most vids look great in 720p and the extra time it takes to render/upload in 1080p isn't worth it (for youtube anyhow). For my 720p vids, I render in AAC MP4 format, 720p, 7 MBPS average bitrate. A 10 min clip in this format is about 300 megs I believe.

Already answered all these questions in my original post. It's 15 minutes long, and it's 2 Gigs in size. Converting to .WMV does not help too much at all in terms of compression.

I was recording in Mode 4 which is 4x3, 1280x960. The file is saved as an MPEG 4 by the GoPro camera I believe, and is close to the same file size as the .WMV.

What program can I use to convert the video to AAC MP4?

Damn and I'm in the field until the third.
I upload about 5 videos a week from racing and they never come out in hd on YouTube for some reason. Wish they would

that's weird... are you sure you are uploading HD videos? maybe your editing program downsizes them. are you sure they are at least 1280x???

try recording a 10 sec clip then uploading that clip directly to youtube from the site.

also, post one of the videos here, maybe someone can find something wrong.

Thanks. I use movie maker since that is all I have but I'm going to try to get lightroom for editing and hope that helps.

I bought a Sony DCRSX45 last weekend. Inside the video quality is great but outdoors in heavy overcast with trying to film motocross the quality was worse than my point and shoot camera. I had a class 4 card in it so maybe that is the reason and should put my class 8 in it

Old post, but no point starting new one. Quick question, im so frustrated with my hero 3 silver, cant find the best settings to use for youtube. What setting do you guys use during day and night for best quality for youtube. I use trackaxpc upload raw file there and it has an option to convert it to you tube. What do you guys do

Thanks alot

Happy holidays :)

I used iMovie and watched a 5 min demonstration I found on YouTube for the settings to use.

I collected three possible solutions for you. Have a try:

Solution 1: Try the GoPro CineForm studio

Try to use the Raw file it produces in MP4 then an edited one with the software from GoPro.

Solution 2: Change the name of GoPro files

Try changing the name of the GoPro file before uploading it from my computer. This time try uploading from Chrome.

Solution 3: Try the app Brorsoft Video Converter

With this GoPro to YouTube video converter, resolve two basic issues: Convert GoPro Hero 3 MP4 video to regular .AVI file compatible for YouTube; divide GoPro Hero 3 files into shorter 15 min sections( YouTube has a 15 min limit in usual.) And then upload the formatted videos to YouTune form computer.

P.S. During the uploading, make sure a fast bandwidth, or it will take a long time.
