Unlocking iPhone 5S

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I've always been a blackberry guy and this is my first iPhone.

I travel a lot and normally just swap out the SIM so I don't get hammered with crazy roaming charges from Rogers. However they simlock the iphone and want $50 to unlock it.

Any simpler way to do it?

Thanks

Yeah, ask the same question on kijiji and a nerd will do it for you for 10-15 bucks.

I don't think anyone can unlock the iPhones (4 or later) for less than $50. When I checked around for my 4S it was $120-150.

Part of the reason why I ended up with an unlocked Blackberry ;)

Yes. I asked a couple of the guys at Pacific Mall and they said they couldn't. Any other phone was fine. Ming Wireless on Dundas wanted $120.

Lots of complaints about online Kijiji scams.

I guess I'll have to bite the bullet.

I think bell is $50 now same as rogers and Telus is the cheapest at $30 just had my telus done recently, took a quick call and it was painless, lot less trouble than trying to get it done else where, and yes jailbreaking is easy unlocking not so much. I recommend you just pay rogers.

Unfortunately not so true, anymore.

OP, no way to get around it; Went through the same hassle myself. There are some third party's that can do it, but the price difference is marginal.

You could also buy a Gevey SIM card.. which fools the phone into thinking it's still with Rogers, but it's a huge PITA, and costs about the same - for these reason's I wouldn't consider it an alternative.

Roger's (and other carriers) pay Apple to lock it to them. They pass that charge down to you (with a markup I assume) to unlock it...

Just pay your carrier to unlock it if you can.
All the software unlocks from PAC mall or whomever will most likely re-lock your phone when you upgrade the software.
Apple locked it down tight but the carriers have no problems unlocking them...for a fee.

Your iPhone has an IMEI number that is stored in an Apple database that all carriers do a look up on. When you pay your carrier, they are basically changing the database to "whitelist" your IMEI number so that other carriers will allow you to use their networks.

I called Rogers to unlock my iPhone, but since it was registered to my old company, they wouldn't do it since I was not the authorized contact. So they lost out on $50 because I just went online and found a reputable unlock service, PayPal-ed them $25 and the next morning, got the notification that they updated the IMEI database. I just had to login to iTunes with my iPhone connected to the computer and my phone was automatically updated as well.

The important part is to find a service that has the iTunes update as the final step. As someone mentioned above, any method that bypasses the IMEI database and does it via SW on the phone only will break whenever there's a new iOS update.
