Under cut gears...huh?

I was looking at a used bike for sale, of a racing lineage.

The Owner had the engine and gear case rebuilt mentioning that the gears were 'undercut'. All he told me was that it improved gear shifting. I test rode it and it did shift crisp like.

The bike is an original Suzuki '82 GS1100 Katana model, all apparently rebuilt.

I've Googeled what I could but not sure what 'under cut ' gears meant for this model.

Any help would be appreciated especially if the work done will reduce the usefullness of the bike ?

It means the dogs have been machined at an angle so they tend to stay engaged more positively. The shifting should actually be a bit more notchy if anything. The plus side is it shouldn't pop out of gear.

Good link Johnny..

APE is great for engine mods and info, I send them my crank shafts for knife edging and race balancing...And Ive had them bore and re-nikasil plate aluminum sport bike cylinders for me...Great quality work and turn around....
