Family only watches about 3 different channels & about 8 different shows, but we're paying through the nose for Rogers Cable.
Discovery, YTV and one of the networks that the other shows are on.

What are the inexpensive, but legal alternatives?

see if the shows you watch are on netflix and/or apple tv. If you combine that with an antenna (which picks up all the local FTA channels), that could be enough.

be advised that netflix and/or apple tv require an internet connection, so you might have to upgrade that package to account for the increased bandwidth.

You could check for legal downloads online. iTunes offers television show downloads for a few dollars each. I'm not really sure what the actual price is or if the shows you'd want would be on there.

Not entirely legal, but beats the crap out of netflicks, posts the shows literally minutes after they have aired that night in divx or HD. I hook my computer up to the tv and pay the monthly fee (only like 6 bucks,) they also have events, movies and comedy specials, documentaries etc. Videocluster.net. Best tv site ever

I will never pay for more than basic cable. I just don't watch enough TV.

But when I do want to watch something in particular, I go to a site called "project free TV" and watch from there. You can hook your laptop up right to the TV and bingo bango!

Internet tv is what u are looking for. Most tv channels are putting their up their shows online.

I just don't find their quality to be very good. Their streams are usually of a lower resolution than the SDTV standard.

Aren't the rabbit ears supposed to stop working in September?

Yeah, rabbit ears are going to digital. You can still use your antennae but now have to buy a digital converter box, about $60... I don't have line of site or I would have canceled cable years ago. I do watch the shows I like on the network web sites. I'm always missing the end of a show now and then. The main ISP's tried to cap download usage like crazy a few months back that would have put net-tv back to a luxury. I'm glad they squashed that.

Will add up and become expensive if you watch a lot of TV. Which i hope not many GTAM members do because most of us have our bikes to keep us entertained:)

Switch to just rogers internet, then splice the cable into the TV. Free cable for the cost of internet. The only downside is you can never have HD as the converter somehow can be detected on your setup. Totally legal if you feel Rogers is ripping you off anyway. After I did it, I had a few Rogers door to door visits trying to sell me on adding cable to my services. Just smile and say no thanks.

Chaos' post reminded me that my father uses an antenna that looks a lot like this one:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4481551&CatId=2767

I believe he gets some of the big stations (Global, CityTV, etc.) but none of the specialty stations like YTV. I don't think that those stations are broadcasts free-to-air.

I bought a similar one at Sayal for about half the price IIRC. Once I got it aimed right I got lots of channels but obviously none of the specialty ones.

Most of the Buffalo stations come in clear but a few Canadian ones are so-so. I'm not sure what's happening to the Canadian channels in the soon coming change but if they are the same format as the USA it shouldn't be a problem.

I might get a second antenna and aim it for the local channels and run a selector switch. When I look at the TV guide I don't see anything I'm really missing. That would be different if I wanted the racing channels etc.
