TV/internet options/screw rogers

So soon we will be moving into a new home, and I would like to drop rogers. Looking to cut some of our bills and also I'm sick of sending them 250 bucks every month.

What are some of our options? Having internet with large limit or no limit on downloading would be great to download a lot of our TV (we do a lot of that now anyway) But I would miss my sports and news channels and stuff like that. Is free to air or anything like that still around? What about HD antenna?

What's everyone doing here to save some cash on TV and internet?

Techsavvy. Get used to not having cable/on demand. Pay less than $50. Big games are online anyway. Hockey playoffs on CBC, olympics on CTV. Or going to the pub and nursing a beer for 3 hours is cheaper than rogers too.

I'm in the same boat as you and would like to see some suggestions. So far I've been downloading a lot of torrents, but I miss the randomness of TV sometimes.

We're pretty sure that we're gonna go with Techsavvy instead of Rogers for internet.

im with techsavvy too under 50 bucks a month for internet
then invested another 100 to 200 bucks for either apple tv or a boxxee and get them modded at pacific mall.
works great

For me, Teksavvy for internet, a synology box and windows computer running PS3 media server as the media servers and a PS3 as a client. I used to run a Linux PVR to grab shows, but can't be bothered anymore. The Synology stores all the media, but doesn't deal well with transcoding if it runs across something it doesn't like, PS3 MS transcodes on the fly for me.

Depending on where you are, over the air HD is viable. In my basement north of the city, I get no channels (I haven't bothered running a cable to the roof to see what I can get), a friend that lives in a tower at Yonge and Eglinton gets 16 channels or so. OTA is actually much better quality than that delivered by rogers or bell, it's amazing if it works for you.

Teksavvy is a good choice for cable. For DSL, I'd go with Velcom as their pricing is a littlebit better, at least for the 25/7 plan. Depends on the phone lines in the area. If they're crap, you wanna go with cable. For TV, OTA, Netflix and whatever you download. Also FTA sat is a good idea, will probably set up something along those lines eventually, just for the international sports coverage. You don't even need a home phone. You can always go with VoIP. Since I don't use it too much, I'm spending like $3 a month with voip.ms (the only "issue" with them is that you have to set up your own device, they don't rent out any, but that's why you save the bundle and you can Google anything you need to set up your ATA [analogue telephone adapter] or SIP phone). For that, you would need to spend a few bucks (still under $100) on a quality router with a good QoS setup. QoS = quality of service - prioritizes your Internet traffic so your web browsing and torrents don't interfere with your VoIP.

I disconnected my cable TV almost a decade ago at $100 per month. I use a digital antenna for local feeds only, covers most networks anyways. I use Cogeco for internet and VOIP, Bell is long gone from my house as well.

Now I'm way more active than I used to be instead of molding into a couch and the local bar carries any hockey or soccer game I might be interested in.

$250 a month.

Hefty bill.

Ditch the home phone, i haven't had one for 5+ years. Wife uses a magic jack with no complaints.

$120 gets the Family and I cable tv, hd pvr's and hi speed internet.

I just set PVR to record all racing on speed tv and i'm golden.

teksavvy for internet.
ps3 with goflex media storage server
websites (through ps3 web) for streaming sports
add netflix for my wife,
torrents for racing/other shows
FTA antenna for regular TV

Acanac for internet
FTA Antenna for HD OTA channels
9 TB of media server for torrents

I was thinking about modding an apple tv or boxxee for my wife as I just got rid of our tv. Preference on either product?
I switch the tekksavvy btw

Acanac for internet
FTA Antenna for HD OTA channels
9 TB of media server for torrents
can you please give some details about your fta for the hd ota channels?

I just use one of these:

It's good for about 25 channels in the city, depending on where it's aimed. Quality is better than cable thanks to less compression in the broadcast.

Netflix is a total bargain for $8 a month. I'd drop cable but I'm addicted to HBO programming as it's all fresh, new and uncensored and doesn't pander to any special interests.

heres my ssystem

internet is with whiteman - $45 month unlimited and high speed

phone is nettalk - cost $80 per year four unlimited us and canada calls and cheap international rates. (plugs into modem so cpu isnt on all the time)

tv is with shaw direct, in the summer we dont use it much so I drop it down to $25 month, winter up the package costs $50

so realy I pay $76 per month for all 3

You could always get FTA (Free to air) satellite and/or an OTA (Over the Air) HD Antenna and pull in channels for free. You wouldn't have the convenience of a PVR though.

If you set up with Windows Media Center, you can have a networkable PVR! All you have to do is tell it you are in Niagara Falls, NY.

thanks for all the great info so far. right now i watch all my downloads off my pc on my xbox 360 through a wired connection. can i do anything with that to watch streaming stuff?
