Quebec city to Immigrants: Don't bribe, avoid smelly foods (CTV Online)

Where does one draw the line between a helpful immigration guide and blatant racism? Quebec always seems to be able to push the boundaries and get away with moving the line well into the racism area and this latest offering is no exception. Or am I just reading too much into this?

I don't think it's necessarily racism.. There are legal and cultural differences between countries.. I've been stopped and harassed by cops looking for bribes in another country.. Also, in some countries, during a romantic encounter, the woman is supposed to resist a little and say no in order to preserve her modesty, before finally relenting to "the pressure". Over here, it's outright rape and many people do not understand that. (*) Cooking with smelly foods and smoking are a bit over the top though... Smoking is a legal activity an if people wanna do it in their homes, that's their business. I HATE the smell of curry but I'll defend a person's right to cook with it (or any other ingredients that I or others might find "smelly").

(*) Tip for dealing with token resistance: As soon as she says "no" or "stop", just get up, get your car keys (or start the engine if you're already in the car) and give her a ride home. Don't display any anger or negativity, but if she's wondering wtf, just say you're obeying the law. That makes SURE you comply with the law and offers a bit of negative reinforcement to her. She'll be extra careful about what she says on the 2nd date.. Great improvement in my scoring percentage, back in the day

My wife is from Venezuela, when she was first here we stopped by the OPP at 9 pm for a burned out trailer light. ( slow night in Muskoka ), after a friendly chat, the Officer just said he wanted to make me aware of it and I was on my way. My wife did not sleep that night as she thought they were going to come to the house.

Also, in Venezuela you do not stop for red lights at night, you slow down a bit to make sure no traffic is coming and blow through the red light, if you stop you face a high risk of getting robbed, you can also do 130 - 140 kms an hour on a two lane road with no problems. So yes I had to explain a few things about culture and society here. So there is always cultural acclimation....

if they don't like it, they don't have to live in quebec. the word racism gets thrown around too much these days. how would the muslims like it if a bunch of tourists visit their country and don't obey their rules and values? fking hypocrites.

Totally agree, round up all the non french speaking people, smelly people and put them in camps until they can be shipped out of Quebec.

I agree with the objective warnings about bribing of authorities and mistreatment of women but the subjective comment about smelly food sound FISHY. The notion of strong food smell varies from one to another. When I immigrated from France to Gatineau in winter 98 the first bad smell I felt was the onion soup in the public places and buses consumed by TROU Quebecois in the morning. At lunch and evening time the mix smell of garlic, burned coffee and body odor of TROU Quebecois was replacing the smell of onion soup. Wash your own a** first before commanding others to do so. The bribing and under the table business is not specific to immigrants. At my job, the owner, a TROU Canadian, deal all the time in Cash and under the table with other TROU Canadian contractors. The only time he is a law-abiding citizen is when he deals with immigrants like me to pay the minimum wage.

u pass at ignant, perfect for Quebec.

when someone comes to stay at your house, they will do whatever they please and don't need to respect your own rules/values/traditions. how does that sound to you? if you have a problem with it, you are automatically racist.

yea, my brother says i'm a racist cause when he stays at my place I make him clean the bathroom floor if he misses the bowl when he pees.

again.. totally agree with you man.

The 2007 code of conduct from Herouxville received attention around the world for explicitly mentioning that stoning women and burning them with acid is illegal in the town.

Shouldn't this be common sense???

your replies are confusing. can't tell if you agree or disagree. or being sarcastic or not. LOL

odds are it was tried, thus it is mentioned.

Doesn't the authorities like baiting ppl?
Just let em stone, then arrest them, that should be more fun
