Hey folks. Just decided to get into the scrap metal business to make $ on the side. The first equipment one needs is a truck right? Want to buy a cheap truck for about 1200. Which truck would you guys recommend? Thanks in advance!!

$1200? maybe a ford ranger.

I reccommend any truck you can find for $1200,LOL

Good luck on your new adventure .. the metal scrap business is very hard to make alot of money in now.
It seems everyone is doing it these days. I just ran into a guy who has been doing it for 20 years, and he told me that the last year or so has been his worst years yet.

if ou have to buy a vehicle, its not worth it. i started a few years ago as a hobby, and then it was a job, now its a hobby again.

4-5 yrs ago there were a ton of people offering free scrap. now you have tons of people offering to pay you to take your scrap away.

plus the depots are a lot pickier about what they take/what condition the scrap is in, and that makes it even harder to make any money.

look for s-10, s-15. you wont need much more than that for amount of scrap thata out there.

I think you can get steel scrap here and there for free but ABC (Aluminum, Brass, Copper) is hard to find in any quantity. The trouble with steel / iron is that you need a heavy duty vehicle to gather enough to make it worth your while. A five gallon pail of brass / copper bits probably brings as much cash as a wrecked cage.

I'm pretty sure there are online sites that give the going rates for scrap.

The trailer is a good suggestion for a couple of months until you see if you're making any headway. Even cheap trucks need insurance.

Another thought is the junk clean up service. You get paid to take stuff away and if you can salvage any of it, Bonus! Just watch you don't get glow-in-the-dark dirt or funny coloured stuff in unlabelled bottles.

Just pour it into used oil containers and go to Canadian Tire and tell them you've got some bottles of used oil for them.
