on my 2002 r6 i want to straighten the bars

iive been suggested 2 options

1 - clip ons
2- "turn and flip" method

i played around with it a bit...i can get them straight if i loosen them and push them up a bit, but to get them to stay i'd have to drill thru the triple with a self tapping screw or something

i've asked a few people and no one seems to know, some say don't because it will weaken the triple and others say do it nothing will happen

anyone have advice?

The 99-04 R6 clipons use a weird design where they bolt to the triple instead of the usual pinch bolt design..Because of that bar adjustments are difficult with the stock clipons...I suggest aftermarket clipons with the usual pinch type design. this will allow you way more bar position options...

I had the stock clip ons on my 99-02 r6 racebike last season. I just removed the bolt that goes into the top triple and straightened them a bit and left it out.

was the pinch strong enough to hold the bars straight?

i'm using it for stunt purposes so i'm worried the pressure might be a bit much on the bars if i leave the bolt out....

In a stunt situation you dont want them too tight or locked into position with a bolt, because when you drop the bike it will bend that bar if its really tight. If its just tight enough not to move while riding, but not so tight that it bends in a crash is better. Then it will just rotate on the fork, and hopefully not bend the bar, then you can just kick it back out like I do..I put a little mark on my bar and triple clamp, so I know what position to kick it back too quickly...My stock 636 clipons I use on my stunt bike is also only use one pinch bolt...

This...it's tight enough to stay while riding but will turn instead of break in a small crash

i'd rather break my clip on dropping the bike than have the clip on move forward while i'm up in a stoppie and have the bike land on top of me(which is what happened to a friend of mine)
bad advice here in my opinion

I have been stunting for about 5 years, from day one I ran my stock bars like this and never once has a bar moved on me unless I crashed. Not only that but many of the stunt riders that i ride with run the exact sme setup and again in years i have not seen a bar move unless crashed. Bad advice for you maybe, but its real life experience unlike your opinion which comes second hand from " what happened a friend". I don't know what kind of stoppies your friend does but I roll around 600ft consistently popping it up at over 100km/h to get that distance. I wouldn't do that over and over if I didn't trust my bars weren't going to move.

Here is an old video from 2011 at 2:30 I drop the bike. I pick it up and ride it but notice my bar moved. I simply stop kick it back into position and keep stunting.
