Transmission rattle - VFR 800

So I have this rattling noise at idle that goes away when the clutch is pulled in. I'm thinking it's a needle bearing but I'm open to suggestions... Anyone have any experience with this?

The bike is an '04 VFR 800 with approx. 25k

Hot/Cold doesn't matter, the sound is the same. I should also mention that I despise paying $90/hr for Honda service and am willing to attempt repairs myself. I'm sure I'm not alone on that one.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Where is the rattle comming from? the clutch basket side?

25k is very low to have isssues with bearings - but its possible.

All Hondas do it
The bike feels like it runs a little rougher when idling in neutral than it does in gear with clutch lever pulled in. You can feel it thru the bars, and hear a very light rattling. As soon as you pull the clutch in, it goes away.
Nothing abnormal.

If its a quiet rattle its normal.

Check on VFRWORLD or VFRDISCUSSION.

A vid would be helpful aswell.

The idler gear that connects the starter with the starter clutch has some play and it spins in a small slot that's part of the clutch cover.

That can cause a slight knock.

Thanks for the input guys. I will keep an eye on it and next time I change the oil, I will open the clutch cover to check things out.

Cheers.

Nothing to do with clutch but look into cam chain tensioner, that is not uncommon.
Why would the the cam chain tensioner rattle or not rattle when the clutch is pulled in?

As mentioned above, this is the normal clutch basket rattle. My bike has done this for the last 60,000 KM.
Nothing to worry about and completely normal.
