trailering to USA

A buddy and I are planning on trailering our bikes to the southern USA this winter for some riding. Do we need any special paperwork to cross the boarder with our bikes in a trailer?

If you have all your paper work in order, (ownerships for all vehicles, insurance slips for same, driver’s license, personal photo I.D. and most importantly passports) then you should be fine. If it’s an enclosed trailer and the first time you’ve crossed you may be required to pull over and allow them to view / verify everything.

The first time the wife and I went south with an enclosed trailer (1999) the US guards didn’t bother with us but coming back the Canadians went through everything. We have crossed every year since and have never had an issue with the bikes. However, dealing with over zealous, possibly ex military, US border guards has caused us a few moments. :(

yeah nothing big just have ownerships ready for the guards ... I'd say 3/4 of the times I've crossed they wanted to see the ownership papers...

Been trailering bikes over the border for years now and only once have I been asked to show paperwork on the bikes on the trailer. Never once was I asked about the trailer at all.

thanks. Any ideas on where to park the trailer while we go off riding for a few days? Are thinking of trailering down to North Carolina somewhere and then riding from there.

Where are you planning to ride? I have a good friend who rents cabins just outside Murphy N.C. He’s a huge bike fan with a large collection of vintage Ducatis.
Many of the hotel/motel chains (that have the space) will allow you to leave vehicles as long as you stay the night before you leave and the night you come back.
When were you planning to go? You do realize that in winter up in the mountains the temperature can drop below freezing at night. They also can get snow.

The plan is to ride south from there; Georgia, Tennessee, maybe. Won't they have favourable riding temps then?

IF you want to store your trailer/truck at a secure yard and pay peanuts...PM ME. Have a very good contact who runs a AAA yard / repair facility out of Ashville, NC...who'd more than happily store your stuff for you.

I always look up for an secure outdoor storage facility (like this one: http://www.adamscountyselfstorage.com/) where I can leave my car and trailer and arrange with them for storage before I leave. This way I save on time and have peace of mind. Price is usually $30-$60.

I have trailered across a couple times, was an open trailer though, and when I pulled up I just gave them the registrations for all vehicles to avaoid any problems or making them ask.

A couple months back I had to rent a UHaul to get my bike back to Canada after a tumble. Amazingly, the Canadian customs guy didn't check a thing. Just looked at my passport and sent me on my way.
