Trailering bike to Florida for winter riding

I'm thinking of trailering my bike to Florida in Jan or Feb of 2013 to get in a few days of riding.

Would like to possibly drive to the north end of Florida and ride from there down into Key West and back.

Has anyone on here done this? If so, do you have any suggestions...where to leave your vehicle and trailer, where to stay or NOT stay etc....

You don't need to go that far south to begin riding - the carolina's will likely be snow free. Park in a storage place in the middle of nowhere or an airport lots for cheap, medium term parking - both usually have some sense of security.

If you don't have an enclosed trailer, rent one from uhaul - the salt spray from your car will be nasty on the bike.

Border guards won't care that you're bringing a vehicle on your trailer - just make sure you have the ownership for the bike inside your car and ready when you get to the booth - heard it'll save you a trip inside many times.

Florida is horribly excruciatingly boring for riding.

Deals Gap - 318 curves in 11 miles

I've done this in 2010, left the car and trailer at Daytona Beach and ended up riding to Key West and back. Take the previous comments regarding how boring is riding in Florida with a grain of salt: there are lots of entertaining roads there, topping with the Overseas Highway to Key West.

Before I trailer the bike somewhere, I locate a fenced public storage facility at my destination and call them to reserve an outdoor spot. U-Haul or others, use Google Maps. Accomodation in Key West is very expensive, if you are on a budget try finding something closer to mainland and take a day trip to Key West.

Seems a bit left field, but, if you want to send a bike down, there are tons of trucks going down to Wellington, FL full of horses next month and into January. If you check with a few of the equine transport companies and ask them if (hey, just checking) they will take a bike down in an empty stall. Not sure what kind of paperwork you would need, but it seemed like a good way to do it.

I go to Florida every year in Feb / Mar and usually just rent a bike there. As mentioned above, florida doesn't have many curves - so renting a Street Glide is not a bad choice. I usually stay on the Treasure Coast, ride the A1A and hit the Keys. The Interstates suck, lots of cops.. but the A1A is beautiful, get to cruise through lots of nice beach towns. I'd highly recommend it.

I think the cost and hassle of trailering a bike all the way to Fla may make renting one down there worthwhile.
I'm going in January, I'll rent a bike for a day while my wife shops. I'll spend a couple hundred renting a bike. She'll spend more on clothes!

I just checked- $149.00 for a Dyna Low rider + tax and insurance - probably $200 for a day. Worth it! Especially if we're having a crappy winter up here.
