Tracking chips

Just bought a new bike, one of the options they offered me was a tracking chip for $500, if my bike is stolen and they can't track it they say I get $4000 in addition to what I get from my insurance, seems like a no brainer with all the Toronto bike thefts, any opinions on this?

Unless you living in condo, i guess, that's useless. Check the bike theft statistics, if you bike make/model is "popular" or not.
You probably never gonna get $4000 - it seems to be just an advertising trick, to sell you some additional useless service.

unless you have a late model 600-1000cc sportbike and/or you park in a condo underground. it seems like a waste of money imho. even still the decerining bike thief will have jamming devices used for these reasons. if they really want your bike, they will get it.

Might want to read what this threads about first.

"if my bike is stolen and they can't track it they say I get $4000 in addition"

So if they used a jamming device, even better for him.

First thing sushii posted ever that I wholeheartedly agree with.

I bought a car alarm (Avital?) for my 88 Iroc. It was stolen from Playdium in Mississauga and never recovered, and Avital paid out their $500 additional "no recovery" bonus on top of what my insurance gave me.

Do you have the name of the tracking device/company so we can do a bit more research?

The only thing I don't like about tracking chips is that most of them only report the position to the police, not you :(

Thanks.

So it's basically lifetime theft insurance for a one time outlay of $500? Sounds decent if you have a high risk bike but otherwise it'd be much more affordable to just lowjack it yourself with a gps unit.

Btw does the fine print say anything about it being your responsibility to keep the tracking unit's battery charged at all times?

Wow that sucks. I parked in an underground over the weekend and thought it would be safer than leaving it outside. But there are tons of cameras usually down there.

If the theft ratio is higher than 8:1 they are still ahead on a $4000 payout. Sell 9 trackers and collect $4500. One of the bikes gets stolen and they pay out $4000. Still up $500. I don't think 10% of Toronto's bikes get stolen.

Ha ha ha - cameras - ha ha ha!! I know many people who have footage from those grainy cameras showing a mini van being stuffed with their bike.

Cameras are a false sense of security.

I just got one of these two, i have the name somewhere...but yeah no monthly tracking fees and i think its good for 5 years

That's not bad then. Most of the other products I've seen cost a couple hundred for the hardware and then like $100 a year (or more) for the tracking service.

Yeah, wouldn't bother if it was monthly fees. like the other guy said the company will send you a check for 4gs if they can't locate it. I'm passing by kahuna today i'll ask em who makes it.
