Towing Question

Does a stinger trailer or similar rail type trailer need to have its own lights if the ones on the car are unobstructed?

What about plate?

Not always true. Think about those welders and compressors that are built with wheels. Never seen one with a plate or lights. I guess there's an exception to every rule.

According to the letter of the law, compressors etc are not trailers, since they are not intended to carry anything, they are considered towed pieces of equipment and don't require plates or lights. If whatever you are towing is intended to or used to carry other items, it becomes a trailer, and therefore requires lights and a plate.
The SMV triangle is intended for limited speed use, such as farm equipment that would be traveling on the shoulder of the road. Again, this according to the letter of the law, regardles of what people may get away with.

Needs a plate, lights are another matter. Signals are not needed on trailers, you need one red light at night. The triangle is a slow moving vehicle sign and you can get a ticket if you are displaying one and moving over 30 KMPH.

62.(24) Lamps required on rear of trailer, etc.
When it’s dark or difficult to see, your trailer must have one red light on the back that can be seen from 150 metres away.

62.(25) Lights on vehicles, objects and contrivances over 2.6 metres in width
When it’s dark or difficult to see, if any part of your vehicle, your load, or anything you’re towing is more than 2.6 metres (8.5 feet) wide it must have 2 red lights or 2 red reflectors, one on each extreme corner.

Why risk getting rear ended for such a simple job?

Even towed tools (compressor, welder etc) are built with lights on them now....

If your vehicle lights and licence plate is blocked then you would have to have lights and move the plate. You also must have a white light on the plate. The cop/mto were going after snowplows trucks that have their front plate blocked with their plow. If a salter was blocking the rear plate it had to be moved and have a white light on it. There is a regulation that anything that over hang the rear of the vehicle by xx inches has to have a light on it. Check the MTO truck website.
