A cop whose cruiser was knocked off a Highway 401 off-ramp into a ditch during a high-speed chase is praising the tow truck driver who helped nab the suspect.

“This is a man who stepped up and did the right thing,” Sgt. Simon Fraser said Saturday night. “I am very impressed with his actions.”

Fraser, who enjoys racing cars and motorcycles recreationally, tried to pull over a Mitsubishi Lancer that was driving fast and erratically around 3 a.m. on Saturday.

When the driver sped off, Fraser pursued it on the eastbound 401 from Weston Rd. to McCowan Rd., before the driver rammed Fraser’s cruiser into a ditch. Fraser wasn’t hurt but had to abandon the chase.

That’s when Trevor Pogue, a driver from First Image Towing who heard about the chase on his scanner, stepped in.

“One of our tow trucks was sitting at Victoria Park Ave. and the vehicle passed him,” Pogue said Saturday at the end of his overnight shift. “I got on to observe and they patched me in with the police car on the system.”

Pogue said he followed the suspect’s vehicle, which exited at McCowan Rd.

“The guy was going way too fast on the off ramp and lost control,” Pogue said. “He then crashed into a police car, pushing the car down into the ditch on the off ramp.”

Pogue followed the driver off the highway on Bellamy Rd. N. just before Lawrence Ave. E.

“He turned down a side street and ditched the car in a driveway, jumped out and took off on foot,” said Pogue. “I jumped out of my truck and followed him on foot into a building and he went inside.”

As Pogue saw the suspect entering the building on Lawrence, he said he updated his co-worker on the driver’s whereabouts and flagged down a police car on the street. Police officers caught the suspect on the third floor of the building.

Fraser praised Pogue for following the Lancer at a safe distance, conveying the suspect’s location to police and allowing officers to make the arrest.

Pogue said he was just doing his job.

“No one wants to see a police officer get injured,” he said. “I just wanted to help out.”
