Toronto police officer dies of injuries after car crash while responding to call

between this and the Paul Walker death, the irony is just sickening

you would think that the police would take this time to re-iterate the importance of seatbelts - but no there's barely any mention at all of that rather glaring fact - officer was ejected, meaning no seatbelt - and died as a result.

Terrible.
 
This was on the news two months ago:

"Among the nine Ontario police officers who've died in car crashes in the last 12 years, five of them weren't wearing a seat belt when they lost their lives, according to data from Ontario's Ministry of Transportation."

over 50%, wow. i remember when i was studying for my fire pre-cert the injury/death stats for firefighters was absurdly skewed in the direction of vehicle collisions
 
There was also that poor bastard in Peel region who died from complications after breaking his leg during fitness recertification. Yeesh.

York region and I don't think he was injuried during the regular fitness cert... I believe it was more specialized training/recertification of some sort.
 
Damn it, maybe deforestation isn't such a bad thing after all.

Or teaching cops to drive more appropriatly for the conditions and environment. Same thing with the female cop in Guelph a while back... or the peel cop a couple of years ago on Steeles.
How many accidents do we seen in the news involving a cop cars?... how many more that you don't hear about?

RIP officer it's sad that happened.

Unfortunately I see a LOT of cops driving with their cellphones to their ear, no seatbelts, and weaving in and out of traffic. My personal pet peeve is when they turn on their lights to get through a red light, and then just turn them back off again soon as they pass the red...at least wait until you get to the next corner so people don't see you do it.

But that's the best perk of being a cop, not waiting at traffic lights as the regular suckers do.

I would rate free drugs and free unsubstantiated cash working for the Drug Task Force or (to a lesser extent) free cash extorting protection money from bar owners in the Entertainment District as a better perk.

My personal pet peeve is when they turn on their lights to get through a red light, and then just turn them back off again soon as they pass the red...at least wait until you get to the next corner so people don't see you do it.

My understanding is that there are actually two legit reasons for doing that.

1) Be conservative with the sirens/lights to keep local bitching low.

2) The lights/siren are more effective if you hear them less, or they come on suddenly. If you're used to constant sirens/cherries chances are higher you'll ignore them, so they turn them on right before the intersection to better get people's attention. When it's a high-priority emergency (such that they're driving fast the whole stretch, with cherries and sirens on), you'll see them slow at intersections and add the squawk-honk as a way of getting people's attention before clearing an intersection.
